Saying and Doing.
“Of, if I had a million dollars,'’
all longingly the poor man hollers,
“how I would help poor hungry mor
tals, and fill their lives with smiles
and chortles. I’d spend my time un
earthing cases where want had
ground the poor men’s faces; from
the widow’s eyes I’d wipe the briny
and make all orphans’ days seem
shiny.” And if in after life he gath
ers a million guilders of his fathers,
to help the poor he Isn’t ready
to spend a single maravedl. “I
not believe in giving money to make
the poor ones’ lives more sunny,” he
butters, with a stern defiance; “it
spoils their sense of self-reliance.
The more you give your hungry

petition, in pursuance of an Act of
the General Assembly of the State
of Georgia, approved December 20th,
1893, and Acts amendatory thereof,
and respectfully show:
Ist. That we desire to form a
corporation for the purpose of carry

State of Georgia.
4th. The amount of Capital Stock
is One Hundred Thousand Dollars,
($100,00.00), divided into 1000 shares
of SIOO.OO each.
6th. The nature of the proposed
corporation shall be that of a Bank,
with continuous succession for the
terra of thirty years, with the right

of the corporation requires, prescribe
“O, Consistency Thou Art a Jewel”
lpto a short while ago, when times were much better than today,
one crippled negro and one tank wagon were ample equipment to distribute
gasoline and kerosene in and around Winder; but upon the Gulf Refining
Company entering the field, the equipment already mentioned has been
doubled, the negro has been replaced with two white drivers, in addition to
which there is a high salaried boss. Now we hardly believe the consump
tion of these products in and around Winder has trebled or even doubled.
In fact, with conditions as they are, doubtless consumption has decreased.
Therefore, it would appear that the Octopus could not have been giving
prompt and satisfactory service until competition brought them to time; or
if they were giving satisfactory service, it will be rather difficult for them
to explain the necessity of doubling their equipment. In any case; the at
tention the Gulf is receiving now is very gratifying, and the intelligent
business men and automobile owners in and around Winder naturally real
ize that they are under obligation to the Gulf Refining Company for creat
ing competitive conditions in this field, and the Gulf’s business has been
substantial evidence to that effect; and not only has the increase in equip
ment brought about better service, but the arrival of the Gulf Refining
Company was heralded by price reductions.
Now, business men of Auburn, Carl, Hoschton, Pendergrass, Jeffer
son, Bogart, Statham, Bethlehem, Winder, and the territory round about
you owe it to yourselves to encourage competition. That Good Gulf Gas
oline is superior to any gas marketed in the State of Georgia, and all ker
osene and gasoline are inspected and approved by the State of Georgia.
Take advantage of the opportunity afforded by the opening of the Gulf Re
fining Company, give us at least half of your business, and we will do our
best at all times to show our appieciation; and you can be sure of prompt
service and the price at all times; and, rest assured, when the Gulf Refining
Company opens up in a community it never withdraws.
We are doing our best to serve you well, and will continue to. This
is all we or any one else can do. If we are not serving you to your satisfaction
advise us and we will arrange our affairs to suit your convenience. We do not
ask any ‘‘special favors”; all we ask is a fair division of your patronage, and
if we fail to “deliver the goods” we will back off, and turn the business over to
our competitors, but now, Mr. Dealer and Mr. Consumer, we feel that so long
as we give you good service, and goods worth the money, that you should in
your own interest give us at least a “child’s part of your business”. Our in
come depends on our sales. If we sell nothing we get nothing. Share 3 r our
business with us, thereby guaranteeing to yourself that, at least, you will
not be forced to pay any more than the actual market value of the products
offered by us.
Now, Gentlemen, it is up to you. If you patronize us we will absolute
ly guarantee that you will get your money’s worth, and likewise we agree to
serve you the very best we know how, and you must be satisfied, or your mon
ey back, and no fool questions asked. We will call to see you next week as
usual. Yours truly,
NIBLACK AND WILLIAMS, Agents.
