filler located a storage in a farm
hnU se and barn near Pocataligo and
- (iz ed and brought to the federal
building in Athens two big automo
bile loads of spirits-two carloads,
eight barrels in ail.
Tll e week past has teen the busiest
in years for the officers. Following
the raid of the big still in an im
mense dug-out iu Oglethorpe county
they recotnnoitered a day or two.
Sunday they found and seized fifty
five gallons of corn whiskey at Du
luth in Gwinnett county.
Across country into Walton the
officers went and a sixty-five gallon
still was located and destroyed near
Monroe.
Wednesday night they found an
other still near Camp’s mill in Wal
ton county and destroyed fifteen hun
dred gallons of beer—Athens Banner.
The Downfall of a King.
King Alcohol must soon appear be
fore the bar of public opinion. Se
vere indictments will be brought
against him through the discoveries
of modern science. His mask will
be torn aside and his real charac
ter revealed. He is not a stimulant,
but a heart depressant, a narcotic
poison and a habit forming drug. He
opens the “door to disease” and
death by attacking and destroying the
white corpuscles of the blood, those
defenders of our health.
Alcohol inflames the stomach, in
terfering with digestion and assimi
lation, and so reduces vitality. It
diminishes the action of the heart,
injures the liver, and interferes with
the respiratory organs. A person
contracting pneumonia when intoxi
cated has very slight chance for re
covery. “Alcohol prepares the so : l
for tuberculosis,” Because of this the
International Tuberculosis Congress
in 1905 declared for a joint fight on
alcoholism.
Alcohol affects the nerve cells of
the brain, retarding mental processes.
The relation of alcohol to insanity
is well known, one case in every four
is traceable to drink. Alcohol when
swallowed is quickly absorbed and
carried by the blood to every part
of the body. The most delicate par f s
are affected first. Its action on the
life germs is so great it is made in
capable of producing perfect, normal
offspring. This accounts for some
of the feeble-mindedness and delin
quent tendencies in children whose
parents indulged in alcoholic drink
prior to their birth. Alcohol, even
when taken in very small quantities,
inflames the baser passions and dead
ens the moral sense, causing many a
side step from the path of virtue.
Alcohol has been well called “the in
dispensable vehicle of business of the
white slave traffic.” Abolish alco
holic drinks and a severe blow would
he dealt its twin vice, the social evil,

A VISIT TO STATHAM SCHOOL.
It was the writer’s good pleasure l ,
Friday, last, to receive a cordial in
vitation from the county school su
perintendent to go with him to Stat
ham. It is useless to say that it
was accepted at once and not only
the ride but the entire morning was
thoroughly enjoyed.
Statham has a school building that
any city would be proud of. With
its spacious playgrounds set in trees
and wired in, it affords a splendid
place for the children to enjoy life
as only children can at their age in
Play.
A more efficient body of teachers
it has not been my good pleasure
to know and see in the school room
actually at work. Prof. Sligh and
each teacher and pupil showed us
the utmost courtesy while present,
and to our surprise we actually found
patrons of the school interested
enough to visit the school in session.
We were there when they came in
and saw them in the act.
Since the day I first entered
school until the present I have been
deeply interested in the work and
never miss an opportunity to visit
a school at work. As teacher and
preacher I have been in many during
my day, but nowhere have I seen
better work done, nor teachers who
were more interested in the progress
of the pupils.
The proof of the pudding is in the
finished product. I listened with
peculiar interest to the 10th grade
recitations as well as to the smaller
grades and it was an inspiration to
see such effective work going on. I
never see an engine running smooth
ly that I don’t almost envy the en
gineer. Every old teacher just feels
good w'hen he sees the children do
ing fine work under a skilled teach
er. Recalls old days.
With such teachers and such a
county superintendent and such en
thusiastic patrons and bright pupils
Statham can’t help but have an A1
school. W. H. Faust.
for they are inseparably connected.
The tax payer and the philanthrop
ist carry heavy burdens because of
King Alcohol. One fourth of our
poverty, one-fourth of our insanity,
one-half of our crime (exclusive of
drunkenness), thirty-five per cent of
our pauperism, and forty-five per
cent of our child misery is the re
sult of drink.
The only way to depose King Al
cohol, entrenched behind billions of
dollars invested in his manufacture,
is to unmask him before the people
and show' his true character. Regu
lar scientific temperance instruction
should be insisted on in all our pub
lic schools —the law on this subject
should be enforced.
Liquor advertisements in the pub
lic press should not be tolerated. The
The duty of the press is to protect
the health, morals and best interests
of the community, by publishing the
facts about alcohol. But because they
are reaping millions from liquor ad
vertisements they withhold this in
formation and also become partners
in increasing the sale of intoxicants.
When we subscribe to their papers
without protest, do we share in their
guilt.
HERE’S PROOF.
A Winder Citizen Tells of His Ex
perience.
You have a right to doubt state
ments of people living far away bul
can you doubt Winder endorsement.
Read it:
C. T. Hamilton, grocer, Athens
St., Winder, says: “Too frequent ac
tion of my kidneys caused me much
annoyance. I sometimes had to get
up four or five times nightly and
as the result was unable to get
much rest. I noticed that the kid
ney secretions were frequently fill
ed with sediment and I generally had
much backache. I noticed improve
nTbht after taking the first box of
Doan’s Kidney Pills, procured at
DT Wages Drug Cos., and when I had
finished two boxes, I was in good
health.”

THE LOAFER.
They say that I am worthless and
I guess, at least, I be, ’cause kids
and other people’s dogs they all
shine up to me. While decent men
is scramblin’ to nail a dollar down
I spend the best part of my time in
aimless ramblin’ roun’. I pity lots
of well-dressed folks that cooly pass
me by, the weariness that’s on their
lips, the pain that’s in their eye.
In winter, just a corner near to some
one else’s fire; in summer-time a
patch of shade’s the top of my de
sire. A gun when fall winds whis
tle, a pole w'hen fishes bite, three
meals, or less if need be, and a
place to sleep at night. To turn
a little favor for a stranger or a pal,
to get a tender smile from a young
ster or a gal, to grin with them that’s
grinning, and weep with them that
weep, to never mind my enemies and
like my friends a heap, to never hurt
a woman’s heart, nor do a man a
wrong, I ask for nothing else except
—to drift and loaf along.
Spring Rain.
It isn’t raining rain to me,
It’s raining daffodils
In every dimpled drop I see
Wild flowers on the hills.
The clouds of gray engulf the day
And overwhelm the tow r n—
It isn’t raining rain for me
It’s raining roses down.
It isn’t raining rain to me,
But fields of clover bloom
Where any buccaneering bee
May find a bed and room.
A health unto the happy
A fig for him who frets—
It isn’t raining rain to me
It’s raining violets.
—Robert Loveman.
Mr. W. J. Russell, of Athens, was
a visitor to Winder Saturday.
A CARD TO CITIZENS.
Do not confound the North of Bay
Counties Exhibit Cars with any other
exhibit cars that have ever visited
the city.
We are not selling land, neither are
we advertising for railroads.
We are sent out by the twelve
boards of trade, made up of the busi
ness men and ranchmen to piomote
Immigration to our particular section
of California, and show the products
which we raise without irrigation.
We are here to show you what la
being done daily in the land of sun
shine, fruits and flowers, where the
harvest starts on New Year’s day and
ends on New Year’s eve.
The inducements we offer in our
part of California in climate, soil and
opportunities are unsurpassed in any
other section of the west.
Our expenses are heavy. We pay
for everything as we go, and we find
it necessary to make a small admis
sion charge, as do all world’s fairs, to
help defray expenses.
The two cars are filled with a grand
array of fruits and vegetables, curloe
and relics from all over the world,
Including tbs largest shark ever cap
tured, all going to make up what
might be termed a little world’s fair
on wheels, and the most Instructive
exhibit that has ever paid your city
a visit.
