TEMPERANCE.
(By Mrs. Harry Segars.)
Specific Temperance.
The following may te timely on
the prohibition qeusticn even if it
was an associational report and is
about a year old, ten spates having
fallen into line meantime. —Ed.
Your committee is well aware that
the term temperance applies to the
proper control of all the appetites
and passions, or to the moderate uee
of all things helpful and total ab
stinence from all things hurtful and
wrong. VV'e note also that the man
ifold forms of intemperance, which
we might here enumerate, do their
hurtful work on humanity.
Yet, the mo6-t hurtful of these in
general, pales into insignificance by
the side of that one which is the
mother or the hand-maiden oi near
ly all the others. \Ye mean that
world-curse—that death-blight to ev
ery human interest, that arch-dcstroy
er of the human race, that heaven
defying enterprise run only in the
interest of “His Satanic Majesty”—
the Liquor Traffic. \Ve therefore, feel
that we serve best the purpose of
an associational temperance repor
by confining our remarks mainly to
this one fearful phase of the sub
ject.
Rum’s Ravages.
It would require books to record
the ravages of rum on the souls and
minds and bodies of men since its
use began. Volumes could be filled
wuth the pathetic words of truth
about the smothered groans, chok
ing sights, and breaking hearts of
wives, widows and orphans; about
*
ruined lives, destroyed homes, de
spoiled communities, and blighteed n
tions; . and all this caused by this
dread monster.
Rum’s Deception.
But liquordom itself has conceded
all the above long ago and entrench
ed itself behind the blind excuse
that this death drug is helpful to
stimulate, warm, nourish, strengthen,
and build up its misled moderate us
ers. But honest, expert, scientific,
research* as well as the study qf
hygiene by boys and girls at school
in several states is routing the en
emy from this shallow ditch. No in
formed man nor youth now’ disputes
the fact that the use of whiskey
makes the cold colder, the sluggish
more sluggish, the weak weaker, the
lean leaner, and the sick sicker, re
ally or finally. Acohol is the king
of poisons and whiskey is an evil
invention serving only evil ends.
Rum's Graft.
Routed from this shattered forti
fication, or soon to be, the enemy
has taken his last stand behind the
breastworks of graft and greed for
gold and hold out their dirty flag
of truce bearing the false inscrip
tion: "This traffic is absolutely nec
essary to your financial prosperity.”
No greater falsehood ever came
from below. The friends of our cause
can view the qeusticn ajone on its
economic side and whip the fight.
The Fight With Rum.
The nation-wide fight is on. Let
us buckle on "the sword of the Lord
and of Gideon,” and march under the
marshal inspiration of the God of bat
ties, who shouts from the head of
the line. “Five of you shall class an
hundred and an hundred of you shall
put ten thousand to flight.”’ Lev.
26:8. Disobedience might cause us
to flee at the sound of a shaken leaf,
while obedience would cause
"one” to chase a thousand, and
“two” to put ten thousand to flight.
Deut. 32:30.
The oncoming crusade against the
drink demon is world-wide. But
the other horrors of the traffic have
not served fully to wake up the na
tions. However, since the trend of
events is ushering the world into
the light on this economic side of
the question and laying bare its direct
a id indirect destruction of our finan
cial and economic well being, oui*
own and other nations are slowly
but surely, waking to the banishment
of this colossal alien tramp and
dead-beat of the world.
Rum’s Awful Cost.
Had we space we could prove by
conservative and carefully sifted sta
tics that drink costs, everywhere and
always, far more than it comes to,
evrn in dollars and cents, besides its
indirect cost of 300 to 400 per cent
more than it brings. Money put into
the liquor traffic is actually lost to
the individual, the community, the
state, or the nation that usee it.
The facta do prove that individuals,
states and communities have less
money under the license system than
they had under the no-license sys
tem, and also less money than have
their equals under the no-license
system who have even fewer end
poorer resources.
Nearly threee-fourths of our area
and 47,000,000 of our population are
now under statutory prohibition, an<
our nine prohibition states will soon
be increased to fifteen or more, and
in proportion as prohibition increas
es, insanity, illiteracy, pauperism,
and crime decrease; and wage-ern
ers, the products of their work, and
the income from it, greatly increase.
The laborers in the liquor trade get
2 per cent, while laborers in clean
business that takes its place get
as high as 37 per ceiut of the mon
ey involved.
New’ York’s 13,000 saloons leave
her in debt annually for their ex
penses to her. She owes $20,000,000
more than the debt of the
United St./.es. If the Liquor Traf
fic were obliterated, only 4 per cent
of the business of the United States
would have to be readjusted, and
our financial, as well as other inter
ests would be greatly enhanced.

We strong advise a spring top dressing of
ARCADIAN Sulphate of Ammonia for your
winter grain. Apply 100 pounds per acre. Put
it on with the fertilizer attachment of your grain
drill. But this does not mean that the hoes or
discs should rip up the soil and damage the
growing plants. Far from it. Raise the hoes or
discs so that they do not touch the earth, just as
when driving along a road. Only be sure this
does not cut out the feitilizer feed. If necessary
remove discs or shoes altogether. All standard
machines can be adjusted to spread ARCA
DIAN Sulphate of Ammonia in this way.
