Whose Crime Is This.
In Macon, Ga., Monday night Miss
Rosa Lee Eubanks, a well known
young lady ©tenographer, was walk
ing down' the street —on her way to
a Valentine party—when, suddenly
and without warning, a bullet, fired
front a passing automobile, pierced
her heart, and she was dead.
In that automobile was a well
knowin young man, temporarily craze<
by drink; and it was he who held in
his hand the smoking pistol, which
but a moment before had cut short
the life of a splendid young woman,
against whom he bore no sort ot
grudge; with whom he was, probably,
not even acquainted.
But there* he was, a murderer, in
the eyes of the law' and of hie fellow
man; and there on the sidewalk, was
the lifeless form of this young lady
who but a moment before, had been
so full of life and happiness.
On another street, only a few
blocks away, wias a so-callid club in
reality, but a subterfuge for the open
barroom that is prohibited by law—
where this young man, .1. A. Bran,-
am, had spent a part of the even-,
ing drinking and passing the time
with his companions.
The ©tuft they sold him to drink
was, in the first place, aa outlawed
beverage in Georgia; if distilled in
sanity and murder can be called a
“beverage” anywhere this side of
hell. Yet, Rrauam’s brain was fired
by the first few drinks—and after
that he, no doubt, gulped down what
ever they set before him, aud contin
ued to call for more. More, more,
more—until he nuhid out of that pea
tilential place a raving maniac: neith
er knowing nor caring where he went
or what he did. To all intents and
purposes as irresponsible and as dan
gerous) to himself and to the public
as if he had jjust escaped from a
madhouse.
Into a public automobile he jump
ed, placed a pistol at the driver’s
head and commanded him to drive,
d/ive, drive. 15ut even this mad
temperance 2
dasth was not enough to his
whiskey-crazed mind; the demon that
had taken possession of his nnlnd —
gulped down with every glass of that
.fateful fluid —commanded him to
shoot, shoot.
And he shot; not once, but as long
as is nervous fingers could pull the
trigger—until that poor young wonir
an, innocently walking along the
streets of her home town,, tell dead;
the chance victim of a drink-crazed
as-assin.
Aml the automobile sped on ami
on; and the “club’s” victim, the
wholesaler’s victim, and the distiller’*
victim —the drink's own victim —knew
not even what he had done; or where
or vrthy.
But yesterday he knew 1 ; or, maybe
at sometime during the night before.
For lie was, finally, taken in hand
amd his friends, or someone, had to
tell him —and, great God, what could
he say, or do, to recall it all; to
bring that poor young woman back
to life, to wash his hands of innocent
blood, to live his own life over again
and to live it free from the enthrall
ing curse of strong drink.
Oh, yes, Branam is guilty—guilty
of murder. And he must be punish
ed; maybe hanged'—for an act he did
not knowingly commit. What a wTeek
of a life; of two Lives; what everlast
ing sorrow for two innocent faniilies
and all for the sake of some distil
ler's poisoned profits.
Mem and women of Georgia, who
killed that poor Macon girl. Branam,
of course because his hand was on
the trigger' and his crazed brain
prompted it to pull. But wilio were
the accessories before the crime.
Who are as responsible as he, in
the signs., of God, if not of man, for
this awful deed.
You know, and we all know; the
man and men who sent that accursed
concoction flowing down from that
worm in the distillery, on through
the bottling plant, to the wholesaler

After Lagrippe—What.
F. G. Prevo, Bedford, Ind., writes:
“An attack of lagrippe left me with
a severe cough. 1 tried everything.
I got so thin it looked as if 1 never
would get well. Finally, two bottles
of Foley’s Honey and Tar cured me.
1 am now well and back to my nor
mal weight.” A reliable remedy for
coughs, colds, croup. Sold every
where. Advt.
ami dealer and “doctored” and cheap
ened it on Hie way—adding increas
ed damnation for the sake of greater
profits, until it, at last, reached the
lips and set on fire the brain of
Bra tram.
All this in Georgia, in this, the
Twentieth Century; and Georgia, for
eight years past, supposedly a pro
hibition state.
Is there any wonder that people
•are calling for law enforcement. Js
there any wonder that state after
state is voting out the accursed
stuff, or as much of it as prohibition
can run out. Is there any wonder
that respectable newspapers are
refusing to be partners in the busi
ness by advertising this distilled in
sanity, murder and suicide for sale.
Think you, there is to be any back
ward step. To go backward®, in the
face of all that has happened, and
is still happening, would be to walk
over the dead bodies of counltess
thousands who were either dragged
to their deaths, or ruthlessly murder
ed, by this relentless demon; would
be to trample upon the graves oJ
many Rosa Lee Eubanks—-innocent
martyrs to an evil, which even their
own ‘prayer®, and those of their
sainted mothers, could not eradicate
before their own precious lives had
been sacrificed to pile up profits fot
those who were willing to coin dol
lar® out of the world's woes.
But Branain must he punished for
daring to drink the stuff that the gov
eminent permits to be concocted for
those who are foolish enough to
swallow it. Then, what of those who
aided and abetted him in every step
of his misspent life —up to the very
hour of his frightful fatal act. —Au-
gusta Chronicle.
