that our United States laid a trap—
ostensibly to catch Villa the bandit —
and deliberately walked into the trap
themselves. It looks like they thot
that they only had to put salt on the
bird’s tail and carry him —a willing
captive —to his execution. It looks tc
me that they started wrong. Took
a lot of men who knew nothing of
all tiie hardships, forced marches, fur
tiier than across the parade ground.
Tiie order seemed to be go after Vil
la. Trot ten miles and walk ten
miles. No wonder that their men
are giving out and their horses are
dying by the thousands. 1 don’t
suppose that any man in our entire
army knows Villa at sight. I see how
lie could disguise himself like any
other cheap .Mexican nigger and
prowl about the American camp ev
ery day and get all the information
that lie wanted, first hand, and sktpp
to the mountains and leave General
Pershing and Colonel Dodd —like the
snipe hunter-—down on the brunch
holding the bag.
1 am looking every day for re
port that Carranza’s forces have join
ed themselves witli Villa and that
war is on in earnest. We are not
supposed to lie at war with Alex
ico, or any other country. If the
censored, wireless, boneless, spine-
Uss reports that we get by the dai
ly press, be true, our soldiers in Alex
ico are up to their necks in fighting,
and chasing and maneuvering, and
bloodshed and not one of them
knows Villa at sight.
Maybe tiie cunning of the Indians
can do more than the bravery of the
whites. I hope so.
Again, I hope that 1 may be par
doned for saying plant corn. Our
fighting folks in .Mexico, with their
horses that live must be fed, as w r ell
as the non-fighters wiio stay at home
