THE CREATION OF THE WORLD.
(A Sermon by Rev. J. S. Settle.)
Text: Gen. 1:1.
“In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth.’' Who is
the author of the creation? God. Who
is God? God is a divinity; a deity;
r the supreme Being.
It does seem to me that the first
chapter of the Bible is enough to
put the infidel out of business. Who
is the infidel? One who does net be
lieve the scriptures, unbelieving, one
who rejects the scriptures and Chris

tianity; an unbeliever. He says there
is no God. He is a fool to begin
with. Ps. 14:1. The fool hath said
in his heart there, is no God. If that
was true there would not have been
any creation, for God is the creator
of all things. “In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth;
and the earth was without form and
void and darkness was upon the face
of the deep, and the spirit of God
moved upon the face of the waters,
and God said let there be light and
there was light, and God saw the
light, that it was good, and God di
vided the light from the darkness
and God called the light day and
the darkness he called night, and
the evening and the morning were
the first day.”
The word void means an empty
space. Empty, vacant, destitute. So
God began with nothing but when
he finished making the world it
was lovely, yet not inhabited as it is
today. But what do we see now? A
world of flowers, the birds that sing
so/sweetly, and as God said multi
•jtly and fill the earth. So we look at
c s world today, not void, not an
empty space, vacant or destitute, but
a world of good things to make us
happy.
The Second Day.
God began the second day’s work
from the sixth to eighth verses “and
God said let there be a firmament in
the midst of the waters, and let it
divide the waters from the waters,
and it was so. And God called the
firmament heaven, and the evening
and the morning were the second
day.”
The Third Day.
Verses 9 to 13: “And God said,
let the waters under the heavens be
gathered together unto one place,
and let the dry land appear, and it
was so, and God called the dry land
earth and the gathering together of
the waters called he seas, and God
saw that it was good, and God said,
let the earth bring forth grass, the
herb yielding seed, and the fruit
trees yielding fruit after his kind,
whose seed is in itself upon the
earth, and it was so.”
let us as trees of God’s crea
tion and planting, bare fruit to the
spirit that we may of the spirit reap
life everlasting. “And the evening
and the morning were the third
day.’’
. The Fourth Day.
From verses 14 to 19, fourth day
of God’s creation. “And God said,
let there be light in the firmament
of heaven to divide the day from the
night; and let them be for signs,
and for seasons and for days and
years; and let them be for lights in
the firmament, and God made two
great lights, the greater light to rule
the day, and the lesser light to rule
the night: he made the stars also;
these two great lights are the sun
and the moon, the sun to rule the
day and the moon to rule and gov
ern the night, and to divide the light
from the darkness and God saw that
k was good, and the evening and the
Morning were the fourth day.

day’s work, “And God said, let the
moving creature that hath life, and
water bring forth abundantly the
moving creature that hath life, and
fowl that may fly above the earth in
the open firmament of heaven, and
God created great whales and every
living creature that movetli, which
the waters brought forth abundant
ly, after their kind and every wing

that it was good, and God blqssed
them, saying be fruitful and multi
ply, fill the waters in the seas and
let fowl multiply in the earth, and
the evening and the morning were
the fifth day.
We hear David speaking of this
part of God’s creation as he said in
th Psalms 8: “When I consider thy
heavens, the work of thy fingers,
the moon and the stars, which thou
hath ordained; what is man, that
thou art mindful of him, and the Son
of man that thou visiteth him; for
thou hast made him a little lower
than the angels and has crowned bin
with glory and honor; thou madest
him to have dominion over the
works of thy hands, thou has put
all things under his feet; all sheep
and oxen, yea, and the beast of the
field, the fowl of the air and the
fish of the sea, and whatsoever pas
seth through the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is
thy name in all the earth.
The Sixth Day.
Tile sixth day’s work is covered
in verses 24-31: “And God said, let
the earth bring forth the living creat
ure after his kind, cattle and creep
ing things and beast of the earth
after his kind, and it was so. And
God said let us make man in our im
age, after our likeness and let him
have dominion over the fish of the
sea and over the fowl of the air, and

earth. So God created man in his
own image, in the image of God cre
ated he him, male and female cre
ated he them. Out of the ground the
Lord God formed every beast of the
air, and brought them to Adam to
see what he would call them and
gave names to all the cattle and to
the fowl of the air and the beast cf
the field, but for Adam there was
not found an helpmeet for him, and
as we find in the second chapter oi
Genesis and twenty-first verse, “and
the Lord God caused a deep sleep to
fall upon Adam, and he slept, and he
took one of his ribs and closed up
the flesh instead thereof, and the
rib which the Lord God had taken
from man, made he a woman and
brought her unto the man and Adam
said, this is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh. She shall be
called woman, because she was taken
out of man, therefore shall a man
leave his father and his mother, and
shall cleave unto his wife, and they
shall be one flesh, and God blessed
them and said unto them, be plenti
ful and multiply and replenish the
earth and subdue it, and have domin
ion over every thing that I have cre
ated. And God saw everything that
he had made, and behold it was very
good and the evening and the morn
ing were the sixth day. Thus the
luavens and the earth were finished
and all the host of them, and on the
seventh day God ended his woik
which he had made and he rested on
the seventh day from all his work
which he had done, and God bless
ed the seventh day and sanctified it,
because that in it he had rested from
all his work, and he has commanded
us to remember the Sabbath day to
keep it holy. Six days shalt thou
labor and do all thy work, but the
seventh day is tb® Sabbath of the
Lord thy God, in it tboa hall not
do any work.”
Six days he said, we shall work
and rest the seventh as he did. It
is a violation of the law for ai farm
er to plow or work on his farm on
the Sabbath day; it is also a viola
tion of the law for a merchant to
sell goods on the Sabbath day, the
farmer lias the same right to plow
on Sunday as the merchant has to
sell a cigar or a bottle of coca-cola
on Sunday. It is much a violation
of the law to sell a cigar as to sell
a sack of flour or a ham of meat.
God blessed the seventh day, sanct
ified it. Sanctify means to set
apart. So God set apart that day
as the day of rest and the day for
worship of God.
