ON PREACHER’S CRITICISM
Editor News:
Allow me space to make a few
comments on a preacher’s criticism
of the eight-hour movement.
When this good man told his con
gregation that man could not live
on eight hours work and that those
expecting it could take a back seat
for they had another think coming,
we join issue with him.
Does he know that over 60 per
cent of Americans now have the
eight-tyour work day, and they are
enjoying the prosperity in advance
of those who work 16 hours a day.
Where and when can men worship
God who are forced to work 16 hours
per day. The greatest man on eart.i
Woodrow Wilson, as well as Mr.
Hughes, is in favor of,the,B-hour,work
day to all America. When the Master
told Peter and John to leave their
fishing and come and fish for men,
He knew they would make a failure
of it if they tried to doboth. God
never wants a divided heart, nor
does He want divided time or ener
gy. God wants a preacher to give Ijis
undivided time to the ministry as
much as He wanted the priest to mil
ister about holy things exclusively.
Until the preacher leaves the law
book, the political book and the pub
lic opinion book in his library and
uses God’s hook exclusively, he can
n ver I’.ope for a shower of blessings
on In's congregations. The ills that
grew out of this failure, and of tb*
churches to support the Gospel min
istry has caused the candle sticks to
be removed from many of our
churches, and they are gone forever.
In First Corinthians, 0:6.14 Paul
presents many arguments to prove
the duty of the Corinthian church to
supply him and Barnabas with Al!
they need in the way of support.
The United States census makes
it clear that the average salary of a
minister in* the United States is on
ly $665 per annum, which is S2OO less
than t‘ie salary of the average grad
ed school janitor. No men of any
vocation are so poorly paid as are
preachers. Yours truly,
W. D. McKinney.

WHEN YOU TAKE A COLD. 4
With the average man cold is a
serious matter and should not be

mon cold. Take Chamberlin’s Cough
