THE PROBLEM OF TEMPTATION.
Extracts frcyn Sermon Preached at
The First Baptist Church Sunday
Morning by Rev. W. H. Faust.
In our Lord’s teaching his discip
les to pray we find this petition,
“Lead us not into temptation. ’ A
peculiar significance attends the
word. It lias a good and a bad sense
God tempted Abraham,, that is lie
word carries with it the idea of P rov
ing good. And there many fall down
in the testing period.
There is an evil personage in the
world. We generally refer to him
as the Devil. He is pronounced a
person as is Christ. He has a dis
tinct mission. When he was cast
flaming headlong from the skies, he
resolve and to work forever against God
The strife las been incessant. The
conflict is even now on and will nev
er be given up until the Christ is
enthrener and the Devil bound and
helpless. He is indeed a powerful
personality. The mediaeval idea that
lie is a hideous monster with horns
and hoofs is erroneous. He comes
always garbed as an angel of light.
God doesn’t always remove tlic.
temptation, hut he docs always give
grace enough to sustain and keep.
“Grace is sufficient for thee,” has
lead many Christian over the hard
places of trial and temptation.
It reveals character. How would
we ever know our strength if it
wife not tested. The man who has
net faced tile enemy and fought a
good fight has not been passed upon
as a veteran trooper. Theories are
alright as far as they go. Kut put
into practice and proven they are
of inestimable more worth. The sto
ry is told that when Stonewall Jack
son in one of his marvellous valley
campaigns wanted to put his army
across a river he called to him a
civil engineer and planned a bridge,
while the engineer was building the
blue prints an aged and practical
blacksmith seeing the importance of
the army moving rapidly, got busy
and built the bridge. When the
engineer came with his blue prints
the work was done and Jackso- of
course commended the smith for his
work. Testing often proves our need
of practice. We Baptists boast of
the truth we have hut some of us
are doing mighty little with it to
be sure.
Ruskin well said, ”No one can
honestly ask to he delivered from
temptation until he has honestly triec
to keep out of It.’*
The sin of presumption is a great
and hurtful one. It is ever well to
keep out of the w"ay of danger and
to avoid the very appearance of evil.
An old pilot whose life had been
spent in a certain rough section of
tile sea was once asked if he didn't
know every rock and sandbank in
his course. No he said but 1 know
where the deep and safe water is
indefinitely better than knowing the
rocks. The bird with a broken pin
ion aud the man whese life is ficarr
ed with sin is not the smoothest.
The reformed drunkard is not nec
essarily the best man. The fellow;
who is tempted and like his Lord
pushes Satan into the back ground
is the strongest.
In a great battle William' of Orange
saw Godfrey his leading baner on a
horse at the front. He rode up and
told him it was folly for him to he
there, and Godfrey replied that it
was alright, God would take care of
him as lie would of the Leader. Nay
said William niy duty calls me here
and yours calls you back to the bank
ing business at home 1 . And even as
they talked a shell tore the head
of the hanker. God will protect us
while we are engaged in hiss work
but he looks only alter his own when
they are doing his will. He will
not protect us serving the enemy.
Asians sin was that he,“Saw, Cov
eted, Took.” These stages ar e but
natural. Seeing, Coveting, Taking,
it is best not to look. Many a girl
has wanted to see life in the city
and when her eyes were opened she
saw more than she ever dreamed she
would see. Many a young man has
felt on- the sheltered farm that he
must see life and when he found him
self he was in the midst of a down
ward car.er in tie city with ft ol
ish, gay and thoughtless comjpan
ions, it is best for the lambs to stay
in tlie fold, and the Lord’s sheep nev
er gained anything by feeding in

Conscience ever warns us and the

Tlie temptation of the Christ is
described accurately for ctir* welfare
and good. We can profit by the teacb
ings and example of the Master here
and say get beind me Satan.
All about us are to be found tempt

WINDER SCHOOL NEWS.
The High School boys are very
deeply interested in the school ath
letics and seem to get quite a quan
tity of pleasure from the practice.
They are preparing themselves for
the Contest to be held.here next April
and through the thorough competence
of Manager Maughon they will be
able to hold their own against any
contestants on the field. The high
jump, the broad jump and the shot
put are their favorite sports at pres
ent.
The High School Basket Ball Team
will be organized and put on the
courts at an early date. Then the
real interest will begin. There will
be match games galore and the en
thusiasm and healthy excitement will
put new life and vigor into the sin
ews of everyone. There are enough
lithe, strong girls in the high school
to make up several teams and with
an ample amount of the “shoot-the
goal’’ spirit, somethnig really worth
while can be developed not. only in
muscle, but in character building as
well.

One me nth of lessons has passed and
th e walls are still unspotted and
the wood-work is still unscratched.
It is devoutly hoped th :t this
can be truthfully said at the close
of the term next May.
The Friday morning programs are
growing more interesting. It is wish
t-d that more of the patrons would
attend these programs and see what
their children are doing in fields,
other than the text-book. A num
her cf students have revealed talents
in this work and are being trained bj
their teachers so that these talents
will be developed into sources of
gi o l and tangible usefulness.
There were quite a number of tard
ies and absences during Fair week
and the week following, but since
things have become quiet and regu
lar cnce more the percentage
has greatly decreased. New and
improved methods are constantly be
ing introduced into the classes.
These serve effe 'tively to transform
the usual hum-drum monotony of
the school room into a pleasant, con
stantly changing search for know
ledge.
Already the dignified little Seniors
are begining to plan for their gradu
ation. That each tender little heart
may receive that which it desires
above all ether things on graduation
day, is the fervent hopes of those
interested and all concerned.
