A Business Should be
as Big as Its Job
If bigness is of benefit to the
public it should be commended.
The size of a business depends upon the
needs which that business is called upon to
serve. A business should be as big as its
job. You do not drive tacks with a pile
driver —or piles with a tack-hammer.
Swift & Company’s growth has been
the natural and inevitable result of na
tional and international needs.
Large-scale production and distribution
are necessary to convert the live stock of
the West into meat and by-products, and
to distribute them over long distances to
the consuming centers of the East and
abroad.
Only an organization like that of Swift &
Company, with its many packing plants, hun
dreds of distributing houses, and thousands
of refrigerator cars, would have been able to
handle the varying seasonal supplies of live
stock and meet the present war emergency
by supplying, without interruption:
First— The U. S. soldiers and the Allies
in Europe by shipping as much as 800 car
loads of meat products in a single week!
Second —The cantonments in the United
States.
Third— The retailers upon whom the
American public depends for its daily
supply of meat.
But many people ask—Do producers and
consumers pay too much for the complex
service rendered?
Everyone, we believe, concedes the effi
ciency of the Swift & Company organization
—in performing a big job in a big way at a
minimum of expense.
Swift & Company’s total profit in 1917 was
less than 4 cents on each dollar of sales of
meat and by-products. Elimination of this
profit would have had practically no effect on
live stock and meat prices.
•
Do you believe that this service can be
rendered for less by any other conceivable
method of organization or operation?
These questions and others are answered fully
and frankly in the Swift & Company 1918 Year
Book sent free on request.

Federal Food Administrator
Receives Encouraging Mes
sage for Farmers Who
Have Own Wheat.
For the present it is the rule that
farmers can grind their own wheat in
small quantities—a month’s supply for
the family at a time consisting of six
pounds to the person, except where a
man lives more than five miles from a
mill. In that case he can have ground
a double portion.
In my mail last Saturday at the bot
ton of a long fourteen page letter, I
found the following paragraph: “The
question of revising the rules and reg
ulations on wheat mill feeds, is now
under discussion, and a meeting will
be held in Washington shortly for this
purpose.”
It is out of order for me to make
predictions as to what the future will
hring, hut I learned several weeks ago
that some effort had been made along
that line, and I am sure that soon some
satisfactory plan will be announced.
However, I am advised that this is per
haps the most complex problem before
the administration. For instance, a
large per cent of the wheat farmers in
the northwest are Herman born and a
large per cent, are German-Americans
and would hoard wheat and do most
anything to hinder the progress of the
American army. Consequently, the rule
was made to apply alike on producers
and consumers.
There are still other reasons why it
is unwise to press these points too
rapidly at this time. There are about
two-thirds of the senators and congress
men who come from sections that do
not grow cotton and they are hammer
ing to get a restriced price on cotton.
Our southern senators and congress
men are doing everything they can to
head off the price regulation on cotton
and so far have been successful and I
am sure they will do everything they
can to help out the southern wheat
farmers, but since cotton is our money
crop the all important thing for them
to do is to keep off the cotton price
regulation. The western man argues
that the average family spends as
much money for cotton clothes as he
does for flour. So there is argument
on botli sides, and I am sure that relief
will come just as soon as all these deli
cate matters can be worked out. There
fore, it behooves us all to exercise some
patience while we are permitted t<#
grow cotton as a money crop and are
not restricted on the price.
Our officials in Washington are on
the job and will bring relief just as
soon as they can.

THE WINDER NEWS, THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1918,
A TRUE STORY OF
GERMAN HELLISHNESS
In a certain section of the state of
Louisiana a colony of Belgian farmers
located several years before the pres
ent war. Many members of the peace
ful and happy little colony had left
relatives and friends in Belgium, and
when prosperity began to come,
thoughts of visiting the land of their
birth and the loved ones left behind,
were uppermost in the minds of many.
Among these was a family of four—
father, mother, son and daughter— a
devoted family, educated and refined.
In the summer of 1914 it was decided
that the mother—a comely woman on
the sunny side of forty, and the daugh
ter should make the long hoped for vis
it, and the two arrived safely in Bel
gium, according to a letter written at
i hat time.
Then the horde of Prussian brutes
overran and devastated that country,
and no further word was heard by the
anxious husband and father from these
two innocent and helpless women, then
American citizens, for two long
years, then the brokenhearted man re
wived the following note, smuggled
through in some manner by way of
Switzerland:
“My Dearest Husband: For
many weary months I have sought
means by which I might communi
cate with you, and the hope that I
might succeed has caused me to re
main alive. Our poor child is al
ready dead—died by her own
hand, to end a life of enforced
shame and degradation too horri
ble for human voice to express.
“We were enslaved by these Ger
man beasts in human form, and
when our bodies were no longer
useful to them on account of the
horrors of loathsome disease, we
were forced to perform the most
menial tasks, even to the plucking
of crawling insects from their
reeking and filthy naked bodies.
“My own darling husband, you
will now know—if you have not al
ready guessed—why I can never
hope to return to you, and loug be
fore this reaches our own adopted
America—if it ever does—l shall
be dead.
“Say to our boy that I kuow he
will join the army in France, and
that his mother will pray with lier
last dying breath that the Al
mighty God will so strengthen his
arm that he can in some small
measure avenge the things done by
these vultures in human form. I
pray that we shall all be joined
again in the great Beyond, where
things like this can never be.”
Proper Food for Weak Stomachs.
__The proper food for one man may be
all wrong for another Every one
should adopt a diet suited to his age
and occupation. Those who have weak
stomachs need to be especially careful
and should eat slowly and masticate
their food thoroughly. It is also im
portant that they keep their bowels
regular. When they become consti
pated or when they feel dull and stu
pid after eating they should take
Chamberlain's Tablets to strengthen
the stomach and move the bowels.
They are easy to take and pleasant in
effect. —adv.

you are constantly troubled with con

and get rid of that and it will be easy.
These tablets not only move the bow
