ARMY AVIATORS
HELD FOR RANSOM
EI. PASO, Tex., Aug. 18. —Every ef
fort. was being exerted by ami.v of
ficials here today to secure more time
in which to get to Mexican bandits
who are holding Lieut. Paul H. Davis
and Harold G. Peterson, of the I'nibsl
States Army Aviation Corps, the $15,-
000 which the brigands demand by to
day for their release.
A message received by headquarters
of the aero unit at Fort Hliss last
night from two aviators, stated the
brigands would put them to death to
day unless the money was forthcoming.
Immediately after Hrig. Gen. James
B. Erwin published a statement re
citing the message from the airmen,
plans were put under way to raise the
ransom. Cowboys and cattlemen at
a camp meeting at Fort, Davis subscrib
ed $15,000 in less than fifteen minutes.
They were notified, however, that Gen
eral Erwin himself would take care of
the 1 ransom.
Father Sends Ransom
At the same time a message was
received by Colonel Langhorne, com
manding at Marfa, from H. G. Peter
son of Hutchinson, Minn., father of
Lieutenant Peterson, stating that the
amount, demanded hy the bandits had
been forwarded to Marfa hy him. An
earlier message from the father had
read
“Making every effort to comply
with request of bandits, hut get more
time. Impossible to get money there
Monday.”
These messages were in answer to
a wire fiom his son, felayed through
Candelaria, by Dawkins Kilpatrick, a
storekeeper to whom the bandits de
mand the money he paid.
Tin* message to the father said :
