THE COTTON RED SriDER
This small mite frequently does much
damage to cotton in hot, dry weather.
The best method of fighting this in
sect is to prevent its occurence l>y
destroying the weeds on which it
spends tin 1 winter, such as poke wotsl,
jimson weed, golden rod and cultivat
ed violets. These may he destroyed by
spraying with sodium arsenate, one
pound to 20 gallons of water. If only
a few plants are infested pull up and
destroy, and spray the surrounding
plants with a 5 j>er cent solution of
kerosine emulsion, or a 2 per cent so
lution of commercial lime sulphur. Af
ter these insects have spread over a
large area it is not practical to con
trol them by spraying, as the cost is
too great. Their progress in the field
may be prevented by pulling up a
strip of cotton about ten feet wide
and plowing the land. Keep the sur
face of this well pulverized and the
red spider can not crawl over it. —W.
Hill Hoscli, County Agricultural Agt.
