Miniature Trees Produced
by Permanently Curtailing
the Growth of the Roots
Miniature trees used ns pnrlor deco
rations generally belong to species
which under ordinary conditions grow
to a much greater height. These par
ticular examples owe their small size
to the fact that their growth has been
artificially stunted. The process Is
simple, according to Popular Mechan
ics.
Cut n thick-skinned orange In two,
and remove the palp from one of the
halves. Coat the skin on the outside
wdth shellac to preserve it, and fill It
with fine, rich soil. Plant two or throe
seeds of some evergreen tree in the
soil, and set it in a room where the
growing plant will get plenty of light.
Be careful to prop up the slcln In
such a way that the shoot will grow
vertically; do not allow the room
where it stands to become overheat
ed, and water the soil In moderation
from time to time. When the roots
force their way through the peel, cut
them off flush with tin* outer surface,
and in doing so be careful not to in
jure the coat of shellac.
After the plant lias attained matur
ity it may be placed In n large flower
pot, and will continue to thrive there,
but aB its roots have been curtailed,
it will be unable to draw more than a
reduced amount of nourishment from
the soil, and so Its growth will be
permanently stunted. Cedars, pines
and even some fruit trees, endure Jhls
process remarkably well.

Women Are Not ‘Persons’
According to English Law
“Person” in the dictionaries Is de
scribed as “an Individual human be
ing.” But It Is not so In England from
a legal standpoint, ns women do not
come within the class. This was re
vealed when the Royal Astronomical
Society of London decided to admit
women as fellows of the council. The
plan was found to be Impossible until
the society had its charter altered.
Eligibles for election In the society's
by-laws were described as “persons,"
and when legal opinion was obtained
it was decided tliut a “person" was
strictly of the masculine sex. The
change was made in the charter and
the clever women who had distinguish
ed themsblves in star gazing were ad
mitted to the'soclety.

Politeness Well Defined
By Three Eminent Persons
Many definitions of politeness have
been given by learn**? and able men
and nre to be found scattered through
literature. Here are three short ones,
each from an eminent man: Sidney
Smith says thut “politeness Is good na
ture regulated hy good sense.” Ma
caulay writes: “Politeness has been
well defined ns b*>nevolenee tn small
things.” He did not originate this def
inition, but he gives it his approval.
Chesterfield claims that politeness
“simply consists in treating others Just
as you love to be treated yourself.” As
to the practice of politeness, the phil
osopher, Bacon, wrote: "The wise nre
polite all the world over; fools are po
lite only at home."

Safety in the placing of all loans on
Real Estate
is of the greatest concern, —protection of the principal comes first and the
interest rate is always of secondary importance
Our Farm Loan Department makes your loan secure by limiting the
amount of the loan to an amount that can be gotten out of the land any
time and under any conditions. At no time do we loan more than 50
per cent of the value of the land and generally as low as 33 1-3 per cent.
Beware of all loans that are excessive and are made only for the
commission involved. Asa bank, our reputation as a conservative bank
ing institution is at stake on all these loans and they MUST be perfectly
safe. Can you risk your money to be placed except by those who have
your interest at heart as well as their own reputation to safeguard?
•
Being a local institution, knowing the men with whom we deal and
keeping in touch with local conditions and values, we are in better po
sition to make loans, larger and yet safe, than can be made by foreign
capital.
We have a few good papers that are for sale—all on local land and
men that you know. They are beyond question and you can make no mis
take in purchasing any of them.
See us if you have money you wish placed or if we can serve you in
any way. Our interest rate is right and you will always find us able to
give careful consideration of your needs and a service that is our pride in
that it is unexcelled.
