Much had feeling has been created
between the wets and the drys over
the method of cnforceing the federal
prohibition law. It seems that in many
cases prohibition agents have been
forcibly entering homes and seizing
such liquor as they could find. Now
the courts in sound cast's an* ruling
that no agent can enter a man’s home
without due process of law. Regard
less of the merits of the wet and dry
issue, a man’s home is his castle and
should be held snored from invasion
„t the whim of any person on sns
pision. There is due proeess of law
provided for the searching of a sus
pected house, and the law should be
respected. To sanction otherwise
would be to subject every home in the
land to invasion by any thief or thug
who saw lit to pin a bogus star to his
vest.
When you see the wind blowing a
dirty piece of paper along the street,
do a little thinking. Many people are
careless every day, or the rubbish of
various kinds would not he littering
our streets and our alleys and our
byways from day to day. Careless
ness breeds tilth—filth breeds disease
disease leads to sickness and doatl*.

Have you a d<*sire to live to a ripe
old age? It is possible to prolong your
life by eating a chunk of garlic every
day. That is, provided your friends
do not take ttie law of life into their
own hands and bury you without wait
ing for the slight formality of death.
—o—
Yes, there are bright lights in the
city by which you may guide your
steps. And there are bright minds in
the country which need no lights to
guide them.

When the automobiles came Into gen
eral use it was freely predicted that
the horse would in time become prac
tically extint. This prediction will
hardly come true, as there will always
lx* urgent need of the horse on the farm.
Hut it may be different with the street
car. In Rockford, 111., the citizens
have tired of their poor street, car ser
vice and decline to renew the franchise.
Instead they are petitioning the state
utilities commission for permission to
operate motor bus lines in lieu of the
street cars.
—O—
The mother who encourages her
daughter to expose the charms of iter
neck, arms and back in order to catch
a husband should think again—and
more seriously. The average man will
look at all lie is permitted to s(*e, but
invariably lie will turn to the girl of
modesty and common sense when lie
seeks a wife. He doesn’t care to share
those charms with tlie public at large.
— o—
world is old in wisdom and in
wickedness, hut a little goodness creeps
in occasionally.
—O—
Good luck to you— and we’ll grab
all we can ourselves.

\W are already face to face with the
Rurpretne court decision that, incomes
from stocks are exempt from income
tax. Stock brokers are heralding this
fact as an inducement in the sale of
stocks, and are quite bold in the matter.
But don’t get, the idea that I’ncle Ham
will not bo able to raise enough taxes
to keep the old ship afloat. There are
plenty of goats loft to squeeze goats
who liave taxable property but no
stocks.
—O—
We Americans have a great habit
of finding fault, with our public officials,
in congress and elsewhere. If the offi
cial acts do not please us we are quick
to pass censure, to say what we think.
This is praiseworthy, for it indicates
that we are thinking people. Hut do
not say these things to the officials
themselves, and that is not praise
worthy. It indicates that we prefer to
sit. back and growl rather than put the
ease directly up to the official concerned
It is an easy way of letting off steam,
and accomplishes nothing but the rag
ging of our own dispositions. Our
officials know this, and because they
do know it they are frequently quite
indifferent to our views. When we
talk with a big stick and smite with
a broomstraw we aim at *nothing and
hit less.
A leading suffragette smilingly as
sures us that some day a woman will
sit in the presidential chair. Not a
doubt of it. And in all of these days
we have been burdened with such an
animal as a president we'll wager that
the wife of every one of them has sur
reptitiously deposited her avoirdupois
in that same old overworked chair.
We even recall a time when a bunch
of ladies at an official banquet were
detected in the act. of trying on Teddy’s
hat —and they enjoyed it, every one of
them. So did Teddy.
Have you ever studied the traits of
character of people you know? If so
you have been both amazed and puzzel
ed at what you have discovered. For
instant, you have noticed that somp
men are kind and gentle with their
wives and yet give their dog a vicious
kick upon the slightest provocation.
Others are gentleness and considera
tion itself to their dogs, hut. are gruff
and brutal to their wives. A few you
will find who are considerate of ail
people and aii things—but only a few.
Perhaps you are one of the exceptions.

Avery essential indication about a young man’s future is not the
amount of salary he receives, it is what he SAVES out of his salary.
If you save fIOO in a year out of a SSO monthly wage, tou are worth more
to yourself than the man is worth who receives $10(] or |l5O a month,
but saves nothing. There is just one way for any man to figure his
value to himself, and that is the amount of his surplus at the end of
each year's work. The present is the time to make yourself worth more.
Open a savings account and keep adding regularly. Delays pay no inter
