AN INCIDENT
Ever so many years ago I was trav
eling on that part of Cumberland
mountain where you can look down on
three States, Virginia to the east, Ten
nessee to the south and Kentucky to
the north. I had stopped at a rather
pretentious double-log house intending
to spend the night. The patriarch who
welcomed me was by my side and tell
ing me of the changes he had made
since he and M'riar had build the
first shack, standing yet as an out
house in the big yard. The old man
remarked that it was time the child
ren were getting home, and just, then
I saw a drove of big boys and girls
crossing from one direction and others
ranging down to little tots coming from
the west, and crossing a stream on
the trunk of a tree evidently cut down
