A PEEP IN ON THE
U. S. CONGRESS
(By W. H. Faust)
It is always a rare privilege to visit
Washington, D. C„ especially while
the Congress is in session.
Despite all that has been said of
on adverse character about the U. S.
Congress, it is the greatest body tlmt
meets in the political world.
Congress meets first of all in a sure
enough building, and both the Senate
and House of Representatives are filled
with able and world famed men.
The Senate
For diginity, this venerable body can
only be surpassed by the Supreme
court, or a young tbeolog just out of
the Seminary.
On Friday and Saturday, of last
week, the'Peace treaty was up for dis-
cussion.
The writer was fortunate in getting
n good comfortable sent where he
could bear and see O. K.
Vice-President Marslinll presided and
the fireworks opened with a character
istic speech by Henato- James Reed,
of Missouri. Asa master of prillipic
and bitter tirade of eloquent denun
ciation his speech could not have been
surpassed. Whatever other acqulr
ments he may possess, Senator Reed
is a master orate r.
Senator Hitchcock defended the ad
ministration ably.
It was interesting to note the various
senator; from ever the nation.
The body was felicitating Senator
Underwood, of Alabama, upon his re
election, apd lie was smilingly receiv
ing the handshakes in a joyous mood.
Borah the leonine whs on the floor.
Fine looking and preposessing.
Senator Culbertson, of Texas, aged
and feeble, vas always in his seat
A giant intellectually though frail of
body.
Senator Carter Glass, of Virginia,
is a man of small statue, though of
unique personality and power.
Senator I edge is handsome and one
of the most scholarly of the senator
lal dignities.
Senator MeCuniber, of North Dako
ta, made a great speech to which pro
found attention was paid for awhile.
Senator Smoot, the great epostle of
Mornionlsm. was there, the object if
great interest to the women, and a
man of giant-like qualities of body and
brain.
Our own Senatot Harris was the
soul of courtesy to every member of
our party.
The House
Congressmen Bell, Brand and Up
shaw were especially nice to us. Bell
is one of the best known and ablest
congressmen from tin* stute.
Frederick li. Gillett, of Massachu
setts, the speaker of the house, seemed
by ids ruling to have as much power
as the famous Reed used to wield.
Uncle Joe Cannon was still on the
floor with his famous cigar nad the
smile that sticks.
(’hump (’lurk, distinguished In looks
and service, was on (leek.
Heflin, of Alabama, was of interest
because of the recent senatorial con
test in his native state.
The son-in-law of Roosevelt, Nich
olas Longworth, seemed to l>e perfectly
at home.
Congressman James R. Mann im
pressed tin* onlooker as a man of more
than ordinary ability.
Time and space forbids us to men
tion all of the men of note, but it would
be Incomplete to close tllls article with
out mentioning two men in whom
Harrow county people are deeply inter
ested.
Congressman Brand has recently in
troduced a bill relative to supreme
court judges which easily places him
to the front as one of the most thought
ful and far-sighted men in congress.
The eighth is splendidly represented by
this efficient and well-equipped lawyer
legislator.
And our congressman from the ninth
seems to be one of the best known and
best loved men in congress. Certainly
his thoughtful and courteous treatment
of all the Georgia delegates will for
ever place them under obligations to
him. It will certainly take a political
revolution like they have in Mexico to
deprive him of his seat in congress.
At last, but by no means least, cornea
Congressman Upshaw, of Atlanta, the
wearer of overalls and of oratorical
fame. This Georgia representative who
is making good, is one of the great
prohibition leaders of the nation. One
has to know this golden-hearted and
able man to feel that Atlanta has
never had a lugger man in the house
of representatives.
The Facts About Rheumatism.
More than nine out of ten cases of
rheumatism are either chronic or mus
cular rheumatism, neither of which re
quire any internal treatment. All that
is required is to massage the affected
parts freely with Chamberland's Lini
ment. You will be surprised at the
relief which It affords.

THE COUNTRY’S PROGRESS
DEPENDS UPON THE SOU TH
The !Drill of life stirs the South,
its prosperity amazes its own people,
its farmers are developing their crops
to such an extent that cotton now
yehls only one-fifth of its farm output,
its factories of every kind are crowded
and many are running night and day
to keep somewhere near the demand
for their products, its oil industry
which is spreading over a vast area
is pouring forth a never-ending stream
of wealth matching in value the world's
gold output.
Prosperity, rampart prosperity, is
now beginning to make itself felt
from Virginia to Texas, and a reigou
which was once poor and unable to
buy is now one of the world's greatest
markets for everything from diamonds
to cook stoves, from automobiles and
motor trucks to locomotives, farm
plows to costly works of art.
This section, long recognized “as the
Siva test undeveloped asset of America,”
is now rapidly becoming the greatest
developed asset. It furnishes Oit per
cent of the country's sulphur, without
which we could not have made war.
It grows two-thirds of (the world’s
cotton, without which mankind would
go unclothed and without which we
could not have entered the war. It
is one of the world's greatest sources
of oil. now fast supplanting coal on
the sea and the land. It is a rich land
in mineral and agricultural potentiali
ties unknown elsewhere on earth.
All Americans may well therefore
look to this marvelous store of latent
and now rapidly developing wealth as
the greatest power in carrying for
ward our country’s mighty march of
progress.
Every business man in this country
should study the South from the view
point of his individual interest in the
nation's progress, for upon the South’s
resources must he built the nation’s
business structure. —Manufactures .Re
