NOBLE SPIRIT OF
THE KU KLUX RLAN
Still lives Among the Sons of the
Famous Reconstruction Organiza
tion—Membership Now Reaches
Into 19 States.
Atlanta, Ga., July 15.—Proof that
the noble spirit that actuated the uiern-
Ikts of the famous Ku Klux Klau in
the reconstruction period still lives
among the sous is shown in the re
markable growth of the organization,
according to Colonel William J. Sim
mons, imperial wizard of the Knights
of the Ku Klux Klun. Its member
ship now reuches into nineteen states
and has representatives in New York,
Illinois, Texas, Missouri and other
distant states.
The annual conclave of the inhabi
tants of the Invisible Empire which
was held in Atlanta last May stirred
renewed Interest in the Klau and its
WO rk. It was attended by members
of the Klan from every section of the
Mouth and from many stab's in other
sections of the country and since that
Colonel Simmons has received numer
ous inquiries regarding the methods
to be pursued in attaining member
ship in the Klan and in organizing
branches in other cities.
One of these inquiries came from
a leading citizen of California who
said be had become convinced that the
Klan, because of the high principles
upon which it is founded and the pur
pose it aims to serve, should be ex
tended to California and the Pacific
states.
The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan,
which is a patriotic, ritualistic fra
ternal order, is no hastily “jumped
up” affair, but has been in the making
up for the last eighteen years, the idea
of perpetuating the principles upon
which the old Ku Klux Klan was
founded having originated in the mind
of Colonel Simmons, who is professor
of Southern History at Lanier Uni
versity in Atlanta.
Colonel Simmons dedicated his life
to this cause and for fourteen years
he thought, studied and woiked to pre
pare himself for launching this great
Institution. In October 1915 he men
tioned his ambition to some friends,
among whom were three men who were
bona fide members of the original Klan
when it disbanded.
On tin* night of October 26, Colonel
Simmons met with these friends and
after he unfolded his plan aU present
thirty-four in number —signed petition
for a charter. On Thanksgiving night
in 1915 the organizers Klan
assembled on the top of Stone Moun
tain, near Atlanta, and there at mid
night, under a blazing tiery cross, took
the oath of allegiance to the Invisi
ble Empire, Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan.
The charter was issued by the state
of Georgia, December 4, 11*15, and a
special charter was granted by the
Superior Court of Fulton county July
1, lttlti.
Since the Klan had among its mem
bers three of the original members of
the old Ku Klux Klan, it was granted
all the rights and privileges enjoyed
by the original organization which
swept the carpet-bagger and the scala
wag from the South in the dark days
of the reconstruction period following
the civil war, restroed to the white
people of the South their rightful posi
tion in the nation, brought order out
of chaos by suppressing the lawless
element of both races and then, having
accomplished the immediate purpose
for which it was organized, was quitely
disbanded by order of General Nathan
Bedford Forrest, who was its chief.
“While conditions today are not the
same as they were when the original
Klan was organized,” says Colonel
Simmons, “the need for an organiza
tion like the Ku Klux Klan is just
as pressing now as it ever was.”
“Its purpose is to Inculcate the sa
cred principles and noble ideas of chiv
alry, the development of character,
the protection of the home and the
chastity of womanhood, the exempli
fication of a pure patriotism toward
our glorious country, the preservation
of American ideals and the mainten
ance of white supjremacy.
“No man is wanted in this order
who hasn't manhood enough to assume
a real oath with serious purpose to
keep the same inviolate. No man is
wanted in this order who will not or
who cannot swear an unqualified al
legiance to the government of the
United States of America, its tiag and
its constitution.
"Only native-born American citizens
who believe in the tenets of the Chris
tian religion and owe no allegiance
of any degree or nature to any foreign
government, political institution, sect,
people or persons are eligible for mem
bership.”
If the man in the moon had a baby
would the sky rocket?” asks Monotone
in the Journal of Labor.

“Another well-known Villa Rica,

a strong statement as to the remark
able merits of Tanlac as a medicine
is Robert H. Cooper, who is one of
the oldest residents of that locality
and who recently made the following
statement.
“1 don't believe I had to take a
thimbleful of medicine in ail my sixty
six years until a year ago, when I had
a very serious illness and was laid
up in bed for fourteen weeks with
catarrh of the throat and stomach. I
wasn’t able to eat anything scarcely
ami got as weuk as a kitten. I was
so nervous that I used to shake like
a leaf at the least little tiling. I got
the best advice that I could and took
various medicines, but it was all to
jio purpose and I never thought I
should pull through.
"Then my brother-in-law, Arthur
Ilensless, got me to taking Tanlac. He
Is always recommending it to people
because it did much for his wife. Well
It Just seemed as though that medicine
had been made specially for me. Every
dose of It seemed to do me good and
before I had finished the third bottle
it had put me In such good shape that
I was back at work on the farm and
able to do a day’s work with anybody.
I now cat as hearty as you please, my
nerves are steady and strong and 1
feel more like a boy of sixteen than
a man of sixty-six. I consider Tanlac
the greatest medicine on earth and I
don't hesitate to recommend it to every
body.” ’
