CURRENT EVENTS
THE WORLD OVER
Italy it* again aha ken by an earth
quake, more violent than any of the
numerous quakes that she lias exper
ienced iu. many years. Hundreds are
dead, crushed iy the falling buildings,
and thousands are injured. The hos
pitals of the stricken district are tilled
with the sufferers, ami all possible aid
is being rushed to them by a sympa
thetic world. The situation beggars
description. Many small towns have
been entirely wiped out, and in some
instances there is not a house stand
ing. Italy has from time immemorial
been the center of seismic disturban
ces, that have destroyed life and prop
erty.
There is a project on foot to develop
the water power of the River Jordan.
Palestine is ala ml without coal or
fuel of any kind, and the industrial
development of the country depends
largely upon utilizing the energy which
can bo developed by harnessing the
river to generate electricity for heat,
light ami power, and for irrigating
large areas of barren lands. The total
length of the Jordan is l(t4 miles. Its
source, at tin 1 Cave‘of Danins, is 1,000
feet above the Mediterranean, making
the total fall nearly 21500 feet. South
of the Sea of Gallilee the valley of
tht* Jordan is from four to fourteen
miles wide, and when the power of
the river is developed this valley will
blossom like a rose.
The Unted States has a matter to
n;*ltk> with Japan that will test the
Monroe Doctripe. It now appears that
Japan, taking advantage of the Euro
pean war, that diverted the attention
of the United States from minor mat
ters, has established and fortified u
naval base on Turtle Island, off Mag
dalina Hay, in lower California. The
Mexican government granted certain
fishing privileges to Japan, and it now
seems that these fishing privleges have
developed into a coaling station and
fortifications that have been erected
in violation of the tenets of that sacred
principle known as the Monroe Doc
trine. This move on the part of Japan
was made known to ltepresentative
Scliull, of Minnesota, who has laid
the matter before the officials of the
government! Turtle} Island is 1100
miles from San Francisco, !Hk> miles
from Mexico City, 200 miles from the
lower extremity of lower California,
and 2240 miles from tin* Panama Canal,
it is a position of strategic value to
Japan, but that she should fortify it
und make use of it us a coaling stution,
unbeknown to the United States, and
in open violation to the Monroe Doc
trine, is almost beyond belief. If the
statement of Representative Schnll is
found to lie correct Japan will be asked
to explain her motives, and very likely
to dismantle whatever fortifications
she may have constructed there.
The Brueau of Internal Revenue Ims
ruled that eider may be made for
home consumption and kept until it
has turned to vinegar. It must not
he sold as a beverage. However there
is expected to he considerable wastage
in tlu' course of fermentation and the
final chemical change that converts the
nlchol to acetic acid, in which condi
tion it is safe. No one, except such
as lhay have a porcelain-lined stomach,
would cure to till up upon eider in
its last stage of decay, or vinegar, even
in its infancy.

OBJECT LESSON
OF BOLSHEVISM
Italy is in the grip of Bolshevism,
and anarchy prevailes. Workers have
seized factories and have fortified them
with barbed wire, machine guns and
tatiks. Boiling water is ready for use
in ease the owners attempt to recover
their property.
Italy is today an object lesson of
what Bolshevism means in Europe.
The Italian Labor Confederation, com
prising some 3,000,000 workefs, is mak
ing an attempt to force upon the vast
majority of Italian citizens minority
rule, along the lines of their Russian
prototypes.
Law is nothing to these Bolshevism
crazed workers, whose motto is “Rule
and Ruin,” regardless of the rights of
the majority, though the world be
sacrificed upon the altar of their in
sane beliefs. Among the Italian work
ers this “rule and ruin” policy has
become thoroughly inculcated that the
striekers have served notice upon the
government that any military inter
ference will lie the excuse for utter
destruction of the most of Italy’s finest
factories.
We in the United States cannot un
derstand the mental process that would
deliberately overthrow law and order.
We have, it is true, had lawless strikes,
in which property and human life
have been destroyed, tint never in the
history of ttie nation have tlie strikers
taken the factories from their owners
by wholesale, deprived the owners of
their property, ami fortified themselves
against the law.
The virus of Bolshevism lias inocu
lated the Italian workers far more
thoroughly than it seemed posible, and
the revolting disease has become a
contagion that is paralizing Italy's in
dustrial system. It has gone beyond
the workers to the military, naval and
civic functions of the government, and
Italy is powerless to act in self-defence;
fearing to make a move lest it pre
cipitate the crash that may shatter
the entire industrial and sooial fabric.
Bolshevism has appeared in high
places. The ministry is playing poli
ties with the leaders in the hope of
prolonging its life, and there appeurs
to be no available specific remedy.
An army in sympathy with the Bol
shevists cannot be depended upon to
suppress the inanity, and Italy may
yet become another communist horror,
equal to Russia.
We have here in America the seeds
of the disease. We have endeavored
to eradicate it before its poison should
inoculate our entire system, and we
have, in a measure, succeeded; yet
it would l>e rush to presume that we
had tlie contagion entirely under con
trol.
Americans arc as a rule level headed ;
too much so to fall easily for commun
ist. nation. Bolshevists in America arc
almost foreign-born, who came to this
country with an innate tiatred for gov
ernment in any form, and having little
understanding of what America has
to offer them; lienee they are easily
led by agitators, and feed greedily upon
the propaganda of communism.
American working men are more
fairly treated that European workers.
They receive higher wages and enjoy
greater privileges. They have better
housing, better schools for their child
ren, better protection in industrial es
tablishments, free hospitals, and in
fact are surrounded by an atmosphere
that should* tend to make men better,
p ore putroitic, more liberty-loving, more
generous, and in every way better men.
We all realize that our system is not
perfect: yet we do feel that it is the
1 test in the world today, and that as
time goes on it will improve and enlarge
until America will be the ideal home
of mankind, where justice will be done,
and where the stars and stripes float
over the brightest and best that the
world may produce; and where Bol
shevism will find no soil in which to
take root.
I our sympathy is with Italy, and
our earnest hopes are that wisdom
I will prevail to bring not only Italy
but all the world out of chons into the
light of lusting peace.

There’s as much difference in the character of paints as in
people. You want paint that not only looks well on you*
property, but that will give you the best service at lowest
cost. That is the reason you should buy a paint containing
the greatest amount of zinc. Without it paint rapidly
darkens, scales off and decays.
MniMlil
