DIRT AND FILTH
By Betsy Doolittle.
Dear Readers:
I wrote for a little monthly
home paper published in Winder
a few years ago, a series of letters
on Cleanliness.
I am giving these letters with
more to follow to The Barrow
•Times for publication, thinking it
might be of some benefit to it’s
many readers, and cause them to
think more along this important
matter and practice cleanliness
more and teach it to the children,
to their cooks and to themselves.
If you think you are clean and
practice none of the filthy habits
about which I shall write from
month to month,it will benefit you
any way to read what I have to
say on this particular line, and if
you are honest will Yourself you
may find out you are guilty of
many of the things you would con
sider filthy in others.
I have wondered and wondered
why this important matter has not
been thought of more and taught
more. “You must eat your peck
of dirt” seems to he accepted as a
matter of fact, and we proceed to
do it and double the prescription.
Most of us have peculiar and
antediluvian noti°ns and concep
tions of what constitutes cleanli
nes. Indeed, we know very little
about it, think very little about it
in detail, and are extremely filthy
in many ways without really be
ing Aware of the fact.
The most important work of the
present time is to tell the people
of the many things they do daily
that are unclean and filtby.so they
may learn better.
Dirty people cannot be clean
. socially, morally nor spiritually.
Dirt and filth tend to dwarf us
mentally, impede our intellectual
development and cause the animal
part of our being to dominate and
enslave the mental, moral and
spiritual forces.
Very few of us are clean, if you
„ will pardon this broad statement,
and the reason for this is, we are
ignorant, having never been
taught cleanliness. You, and the
world generally, need schooling,
and then if you just want to he
filthy,why, the old adage Where
ignorance is bliss, ’tis folly to be

Drink Buttermilk Freely.
The use of buttermilk Is largely a
matter of habit. Southern cities con
sume almost as much buttermilk as
sweet milk. The difficulty of keeping
milk sweet has been largely responsi
ble for the popularity of buttermilk as
beverage.

Six Tears Ago, Thinking She Might Die, Says Texas Lady, But Now
She Is a Well, Strong Woman and Praises Cardui For

birth of my little girl...my side com

to bed. We called the doctor. He
treated me...but I got no better. I
got worse and worse until the misery
was unbearable..-.I was in bed for
three months and suffered such agony
that I was just drawn up In a knot...
I told my husband if he would get
me a bottle of Cardui I would try it...
I commenced taking it, however, that
evening I called my family about
me... for I knew I could not last
many days unless I had a change tor
and tell you things that will help
all of you who would like to be
clean, mentally, socially and mor
ally.
Watch my column every week,
read it, do not get mad, but apply
it to yourself and it will do you
good and open your eyes and un

and I am still here and am a weH

Cardui. I had only taken half tha
bottle when I began to feel better.
The misery in my side got less... 1
continued right on taking the Cardui
until I had taken three bottles and I
did not need any more for I was well
and never felt better in my life... I
have never had any trouble from that
day to this.”
Do you suffer from headache, back

ANARCHISTS, IF CAUGHT,
WILL BE TRIED HERE.
By James A. Hollomon.
New York.—lt became known
that the net of justice that is rap
idly closing in upon the anarch
ists who have within the last few
days flooded the mails with death
bombs, in a wholesale effort to as
sasinate more than a score of A
merica’s most prominent men, will
be opend up in Georgia and the
culprits, when caught will be first
amenable to the state laws of that
commonwealth under the old Sax
on statue of mayhem, which pro
vides a life or death penalty for
depriving a person of his or her
member.
This theory as to the trial of
the anarchists when caught was
advanced to me by one of New
York’s most prominent lawyers
who is thoroughly familiar with
the old Georgia statute that may
bring the anarchists to trial in
Atkrnta rather than in the feder
al courts of New York.
Poisoned Chocolate Case.
The celebrated case of the pois
oned chocolates that were sent
from Los Angles to New York is
cited as an example, too. In that
ease the supreme court held that
the state of New York had first
call upon the defendants in that
the damage to corpus incurred by
the offense was inflicted in New
York and thus transcended the
federal offense, in severity of pos
sible punishment, of transmitting
poison through the mails for the
purpose of causing death.
Only Ones Injured.
The only persons in all the na
tion-wide scheme to kill who were
actually injured by the bombs,
were the servant of ex-Senator
Hardwick of Atlanta, who lost
both hands in the explosion, and
Mrs. Hardwick, who was slightly
wounded.

servant by the explosion consti

Electr’ned Cropt.
Experiments carried out :r, 1916 on
a farm in Dumfries to demonstrate the
effect of overhead discharge of elec
tricity plant growth gave some re
markable results. The tests were car
ried out on a field of oats, and the elec
trified area of one acre gave an in
creased yield of 873 pounds of grain,
or 49 per cent, over the two half acres
unelectrified, while the straw yielded
un increase of SS per cent.
