Phrenological. An odd reminder, says the Independ ent, of the days when phrenology was popular as a means of “rending char acter,” with a sly dig at the tendency of Its professors to give complimentary explanations of the “bumps," Is found In n letter from Elizabeth Barrett Browning advertised for sale in a Lon don bookseller’s catalogue. It reads In part: "Do you believe in phrenol ogy? Did you ever consult a phreno logical oracle? and did it answer, ‘My son, thou urt Invincible?'" Striving After Strength. That live, patriotic bandof boys and girls, the Loyal Temperance. Legion, is always undertaking big, worth-while tasks, and now i! is Victory Gardens. The Legion is divided into companies accord ing to age, each company with its own Captain and Lieutenant. Company A (12-14 years) Cap tain Alton Young and Lieutenant Imogene Herrin. Company B (10-12 years) Cap tain W. C. Horton and Lieutenant Preston Cash. The proceeds of these Victory Gardens will go to the support of the little French orphan adopted by the Legion. Several very in teresting letters have been receiv ed from this little girl, expressing her appreciation of what her friends here are doing for her. Siie was 11 years old April 20th, and already a fine birthday box has been sent to her by the generous hoys and girls of the Legion. There are people in Winder who have no gardens, and we are sure they will he glad to buy their fresh vegetables from these busy, patriotic little gardeners, and so help them in their beautiful ser vice of love. The Loyal Temperance Legion, inder the faithful leadership of Mrs. Paul Roberts, is doing a great work, and more than any present work that they may do. the hoys arid girls are being train ed to become strong, clean, help ful. purposeful men and wo?* ten, prepaied Mr the duties that may come to Hi m in the y ars to c ane. IHI HI l i IN PRESENCE OF CHICAGO OPERA STARS As Alfredo in Traviata, the initial offer ing; of the Chicago Opera Association this season, Ciccolini scored a distinct success. Next day he dropped into a music studio ac companied by his friends, Carolina and Vir gilo Lazzari, the famous contralto and basso of the organization. They started playing some of their own Recreations on the new Edison. As the strains of Marechaire, the delightful Neapolitan street song soard through the room the distinguished tenor joined in, as pictured above, singing in uni son with his own Recreation. “Bravo!” shouted Virgilo Lazzari. “A duet. I swear you can’t tell the two apart. I’ll try to.” He shut his eyes. Gradually Cicolini sang more softly. Finally he ceased. “Why don’t you stop?” inquired the lis tener a moment later, “so that I can tell the difference?” The NEW EDISON “The Phonograph with a Soul” with the result that you can now have in tative musicians.
