Your Vacattion at Home With Commun
ity Chautauqua.
Vacation seems to lie filling the mint!
of every one at this time, and quite a
few are finding it a problem. To got
what one wants at the price one wants
is not always easy. Very few have
thought of spending a vacation at home
—for ordinarily ahere is no unusual
diversion, but those who want a vaca
tion within a month are assured of all
the entertainment of every kind that
they can find in any lage city. The
Community Chautauqua is coming once
more, and this year it brings a greater
array of talent than ever. 'The features
which are described below are the most
original appearing anywhere this eason,
so that those who want the best of en
tertainment oflared by the city are as
sured of having it right at home—at
much less expense. For this vacation
saves one ul the expense and inconven
ience of travel, nnd gives the entertain
ment at n most reasonable figure com
pared with what it would cost in the
city.
The Economy of Buying Early.
A season ticket admitting the Chau
tauqua vacationer to all the attractions
of the two big performances on each
of the five days costs only $2.75 includ-
ing war tax, and the tickets for this
great holiday can be obtained from the
local eonimitte. The old saying that
the early bird catches the worm is true
in this ease, for the local committee
tins arranged for a special rate on the
first 500 tickets sold, and many one who
obtains one of these pays only $2.20
making a saving of 55 cents. No more
economical vacation can be obtained
and the unique attractions offered to
the Community Chautauqua audiences
are unequalled else in America.
German Revolution Described on First
Day.
The attraction for the opening night
i the great nnd thrilling lecture by
Harwood Spicer of London, England,
the first and only eye-witness of the Ger
man Revolution to appear in this coun
try. He describes in vivid fashion his
thrilling adventures in Germany. Ho
was held prisoner in that country dur
ing'tho entire period of the war, and
was released from a prison ship inHam
burg harbor just in time to so the be
ginning of the German Revolution ear
ly last November which led to the over
throw of the Kaiser and the downfall
of Germany. He was on one of the
trains that was deliberately wrecked
by the revolutionists, and after his mir
aculous escape, he continued on to Ber
lin where he saw the storming of the
Koval Palace and its capture by the
mob.
He pnints a vivid picture of the
flight of the Kaiser nnd throws anew
light on the reported murder of the
Crown Prince. He tells of the spread
of the Rod Terror throughout Germany
which proves that Germany is paying
the penalty of her crimes.
The remarkable story of this distin
guished speaker makes an opening
night attraction that no one will miss.
In accordance with its policy of “The
best, no matter where or how”, the
Community Chautauqua has brought
Harwood Spicer from England especi
ally for this tour.
Music for Everybody.
Everybody will enjoy the delightful
program presented on the same even
ing by the Del Mar Singing Quartet
and Orchestra. They bring all the lat
est song hits straight from Broadway
and give besides many clever instru
mental numbers that have plenty of
snap and melody. Every one who
hears these four talented musicians
says “they’re different’’ and the great
variety of popular melodies they pre-
sent insures something pleasing to ev
eryone . The striking costumes nnd the
rich nnd coloring sotting of this attrac
tion add greatly to its popularity.
Equally charming are the Misses
Keller, whoso recital is given on the
third evening of tho Chautauqua.
Young and old will be charmed with
their bright, original songs in w-hieh
the all American spirit predominates.
They are featuring the best music writ
ten in America, and as Miss T.uella
Keller is herself a composer of aeknowl
edged merit, the offerings are certain
to appeal. These gifted sisiters not on
ly play and sing Ihe choicest composi
tions, hut give an explanatory back
ground of music so that n person who
has not time to study music, will he a
hie to appreciate the most difficult se
lections after hearing their explana
tions. Those who wish to understand
will find this an excellent opportuni
ty to learn how.
Real Americanism for Real Americans.
On the same evening, the prominent
American statesman, Montaville h low
ers. who has done so much towards mak
ing Americanism a reality in this eoun
trv will present a stirring address on
present day problems. His work in
organizing and promoting the great
Cont'erenre of American Lecturers
which met in Washington in April,
101S to consider ways anil moans of
unifying American thought has given
him a prominent place among platform
personalities. The best thought of
America and Europe was brought out
at this Remarkable conference; and as
a result Mr. Montaville Flowers pub
lished tho note-worthy volume “What
Every American Should Know About
the War” which constitutes one of the
most worth-while contributions to the
war literature we have.
The subject of this present lecture at
the Community Chautauqua is ‘‘Our
National Highway to Happiness”— a
subject of vital importance to every
American, for it treats in a broad-mind
ed, constructive manner the leading
questions of the day.
The Royal Grenadiers.
Everyone recognizes the innate mu
sical ability of the Italians and with
this i?i mind the Community Chautau
qua sought out the Royal Grenadiers,
made up of native sons of Italy, who
combine with their natural musical
ability the skill and precision that
comes from long military service. Each
member of the band lias seen actual
service under the Italian flag and be
cause of this the Grenadier play with
an intense fervor of enthusiasm that
is certain to make the fourth day a
musical memory of long duration.
Something Brand New.
The ordinary hand merely plays een
eral selections with but few varieties.
The Grenadiers, realizing the value of
novelty, have introduced a brass fan
fare into ttie program, an innovation
hitherto belonging solely to the milita
ry. This group of instruments produce
a tone combination at once pleasing
and so musical that it has won instant
popularity. This innovation was just
brought to this country by the Royal
Grenadiers for the sole purpose of giv
ing to concert music that swing and
dash so universally admired in a mili
tary band. Of unusual interest will lie
the use of the fanfare ia giving the mu
sical evolution from old Neapolitan
folk songs to the frenzy of the modern
jazz band.
The program of the Royal Grenadiers
will open a series of allied bugle calls
presented by a trumpet sextette and
from this until the great military tab
leau at the close there is one thrill af
ter another of stirring battle songs and
national anthems.
The Community Chautauqua manage
ment considers itself indeed lucky to
secure so talented an organization at
this particular time in the world re
construction when real music means
so much.
Magic, Mirth and Melody.
The other artists on the program pre
sent features so diversified and so in
teresting that no one will want to miss
a single performance. Prominent on
the list is Brush the Great, the magi
cian who has enchanted two continents
with his clever tricks. His net is so
amusing and so mystifying that vonng
and old are fascinated. There are so
many new tricks and such interesting
explanations of the old ones that have
long puzzled thousands, that his audi
ences are enchanted by his cleverness
and dexterity.
The last night of the Chautauqua is
known as Joy Night, and no one who
wants plenty of fun and merriment can
afford to miss it. To crown the evening
is the famous mirth-provoker Strick
land Oillilan, America’s greatest liv
ing humorist. His delightful humor is
universal in its appeal for he talks of
everyday things and makes his audi
ence see the funny side of them. He
gives an hour of the kind of fun that
keeps you in high spirits for weeks af-
terwards.
With him appears one of the most
timely attractions the program offers
—the Doughboys Male Quartet. These
four fighting Americans come directly
front the front line trenches with all
their thrils and adventures to sing for
our Americans the kind of songs that
are dear to the hearts of Americans.
All the stirring patriotic airs that set
our hearts nthrill, as well as those snap
py, dashing trench songs composed by
the soldiers themselves. This offering
will thrill you as nothing has dono
since the boys marched away.
How to Be Healthy and Happy
Those interested in the important
subject of health will find the offering
by I.ouise Melntire of the Battle Creek
Sanitarium of great importance. This
forceful direct lecture is accompanied
by n series of simple exercises from
which every one can gain sufficient
knowledge to lay the foundation for
a program of body and health building.
The Greatest of Modern Dramas.
Full of human interest, and porhaps
a bit emotional in its appeal is the dra
matic reading presented by Miss Maud
Willie, who makes every character in
the famous Broadway hit “Turn To
The Right’’ live before the eyes of the
audience. Miss Willie has just complet
ed a tour of the cantonments of the
country where she wns welcomed by the
boys in khaki as a gloom-chaser and
cheer-bringer of the most popular type.
Of all the great dramas presented by
Miss Wilis, “Turn To The Right” prov
ed the most popular with our American
soldiers, so that it has been made tho
feature of Miss Willis’ program for
Community Chautauqua this season.
