Laughter and Thrills by Two
Great Americans.
Lots of people have the idea
that a lecture is a dull, dry af
fair at which one falls asleep; so
that there is an agreeable surprise
in store for them at the Conimun
.ity Chautauqua. For this year’s
'program includes two of the most
interesting and inspiring platform
personalities in America. Those
who come to laugh are assured
that they will do so on the night
that Strickland Gillilan appears,
for he is termed America’s loving
humorist—and he fully justifies
the title. His is that rare brand
of humor that turns on everyday
affairs—and brings a laugh out of
the most matter-of-fact, common
place situation. He talks of in
timate things in an intimate way,
and leaves you with the feeling
that you have met a very delight
ful friend. It has been said that
laughter is the best toic, so that
there is a real bracer for every
one who hears Strickland Gilli
lan.
Joy Bringer For Joy Night.
No more fitting attraction could
be presented as the crowning
touch for the great Joy Night that
is to close the Chautauqua, for he
will leave everyone smiling for
weeks afterwards. Gloom has no
chance when this myrth-provoker
is present; yet as he himself ad
mits he is a very modest person,
and brags about it a great deal.
He confesses that he grew up on a
form and acquired his distinctly
individual walk straddling corn
rows, is own expression on this
subject is; “While 1 have improv
ed a great deal since I left that
farm, it benefited even more by
the separation. My going away
was just the making of + hat farm”
“I am no Lillian Russell and no
body ever mistook me for her. Nor
am 1 Douglas Fairbanks, for I nev
For you or the
painter, quality tells
To the painter, a high quality paint or
varnish always helps to make a job that
satisfies. To you, when you do your
own paintine, it means quite as much.
Not only does quality insure you lasting
beauty of surface, but accurate proportion
ing, uniform mising and easy spreading.
Whatever the purpose, whoever the
painter, the Certain-teed, Paint or Var
nish for that purpose will prove its
quality by satisfaction —spread far
ther, cover better, and give longer
beauty and service. Certain-teed
quality and satisfaction are the result
of experienced, painstaking, up-to
date manufacture. From the careful
selection of only the best materials,
to the thorough grinding and ma
chine mixing under the eye of trained
experts, every step is planned to pro
duce a product of Certain-teed quality
and satisfaction.

It’s very seldom that Strick
land Gillilan talks so much about
himself, but when lie talks about
ships, and shoes and sealing Avax,
he is capable of going on indefi
nitely in a style that is distinctly
his own. Yet, occassionally there
is a vein of serious thought that
reveals hoAv great is the mind be
hind all lightness and fun.
It is this rare combination of
deep thought and genuine humor
that makes the Avrittings of Striek
land Gillilan welcomed regularly
by such distinguished publications
as “The Ladies’ Home Journal,”
“Judge,” “Farm Life,” “Motor
Life” and others.
What America Is Facing Today.
Even a serious subject can be
of vital interest when presented
by a master speaker like Monta
ville Flo Avers. This all-American
statesman appears this season
with an inspiring lecture on Amer
ica’s problems of the moment; and
he treats his subject in so broad
minded and direct a manner that
it grips the attention and arous
es the enthusiasm of every think
ing American. At a time as crit
ical as this reconstruction period,
a man of broad vision and deep
knoAvledge is needed to iiclp us get
a true perspective on our pressing
problems. Montaville Flowers dis
cusses such questions as lioav shall
Ave fight Bolshevism? Hoav shall
Ave Americanize the Foreigner?
What are the citizens obligations
to the government and the govern
unit’s to the citizen?
“Our National Highway to Hap
piness” is the direct answer to all
these questions. The lecture was
written as a direct conclusion of
the remarkable knowledge of pres

MAUDE WILLIS,
Dramatic Reader.
To make people live before you is
the rare gift of Miss Maude Willis,
the well-known dramatic reader, who
is presenting the famous play “Turn
to the Right,” on the second afternoon
of the Community Chautauqua pro
gram. Her keen character analysis,
as well as her remarkably beautiful
voice make her performance a delight
to all who love real American drama
with a thrill, a tear, and lots of smiles.

Flowers during his war Avork. Llis

most American speakers and the
distinguished representatives of
foreign governments to formulate
a definite policy of presenting war
issues to the country. Asa result
of this important work, Mr. Flow

volume entitled “What Every

the most complete and compact
contributions to our .Avar litera

No striking is the personality
of Mr. Flowers, and so forceful is
his method of speaking, that his
audience is inspired to greater
patriotic pride in America, the
greatness of which is so clearly re
vealed in a statesman like Monta
ville Flowers.
