SPEECH OF HON. THOMAS M. BELL, OF GEORGIA In The House of Representatives, Wednesday, June 18, 1919. Mr. BELL. Mr. Speaker. I take pleasure in registering my approv al of the immediate repeal of the so-called daylight-saving act. This • act is supposed to have been a "war measure,” and, if so, now that the war is over, it evidently lias served its purpose. If any of the people of this great country have been benefited by this law, they are the people living in the great cities; and I am willing to grant this as being true; yet, at the same time, it has been a great inconvenience to the millions of farming people, upon whom we all depend. It. is urged, and it is true, that we now need more producers if the high cost of living is to be re duced, and we should make the hours of labor as pleasant, con venient, and attractive as possible for the great mass of people who are now relied upon for so much. I am, therefore, ready to vote for the repeal in toto of this law. 1 am sure that a large majority if not the whole people of my district de sire its repeal. It is true that no law of this •character could be enacted that would meet the convenience of every one, but if we are called upon to legislate at all in this way it is our duty to consider the con venience of those who are most needed in bringing back to this country normal times, so that we may as much as possible be reliev ed of many annoyances whicVTfol low the wake of war. Our President, Commander in Chief of our forces engaged in the European war. favored this day light-saving law during trie war activities, feeling and believing that coal, food and fuel would thereby be saved and that “war ‘gardens” would be made which otherwise would not be, but the President no doubt now realizes, as we do, that there is no longer any reason for the continuance of this measure. * The debate upon the floor today for and against the repeal of this law calls to my mind a colloquy that occurred in my district be tween two negroes who felt they were equal to any emergency as representatives of their race. One said, in the discussion of the great est men, living or dead, that Jos hua was the greatest man who ever lived. The other, in response to this statement, asked: “Why do you say that Joshua was the greatest man who ever lived,” He said, “Cause Joshua stopped the . sun for one hour so he could fight a battle.” The other said, “ 1 agree that Joshua did stop the sun for | one hour so that be might have daytime in order to fight a battle and that Joshua was a very great man, but, in my bumble judge ment, he was not the man who ever lived, but that Woodrow Wilson is the greatest man living or dead.” The first speaker said, "“Why do you say that Woodrow Wilson is the greatest man?” “Cause Woodrow Wilson ran the sun up one hour, licked the devil out of the Germans, and there’s where he skint Joshua.” Mr. Chairman, we did lick the Germans, and now that the war is over, let us get back to the normal time and put the sun back where Joshua left it. Let us not only get back to normal times so far as daylight saving is concerned, but we should employ every method by which we may reduce the high cost of living, reduce the taxes as much as possible which have been ■ imposed upon the people, allow commensurate with that which he the farmer a price for his products has to buy encourage by whole some legislation the soldier boys who have and wilfreturn from the battle fifields of Europe to go back to their homes satisfied with the great work they have accomplish ed, where they can live happily FIVE CHILDREN BURNED. A reader wants to know if feed ing cottonseed meal to her eow will cause whey to form and sepa rate from the clabber. No, the feeding of cottonseed meal will produce no such effect. The handling of the milk so as to favor the proper development of the souring bacteria will prevent such troubles. Extreme care in handling and keeping the milk at the proper temperature will solve the difficulty, and it is not neces sary to stop feeding cottonseed meal to do so. In fact, when the cows are on green pasture and the weather is warm, the feeding of a moderate amount of cottonseed meal has a distinct advantage. When butter is made in warm weather it will be firmer and have a better texture if cottonseed meal is fed than when it is not. Of course too much cottonseed meal can lie fed, as may be said of almost any other rich concentrate, but when a cow is on grass from two to four, or even five pounds of cottonseed meal, according to the amount of milk the cow produces, may be fed to advantage, without injurious results, either to the cow or the product.— Progressive Far mer. First, lie was found guilty and acknowledged that he accepted without tlie knowl edge of the other heirs at law, a commission of $620,401.71 on the sale of 210,082 shares of stock in the Western Union Telegraph Company. Second. He failed to comply with the terms of his father’s Will which specifically stated that he should divide the estate in six seperate Trusts. Third. He mingled the Trusts funds with his own funds and used said *fust funds as if they were his own without authority, of course. He was also accused by his brothers and sisters of mismanaging said estate and has lost $25,000,000,00 for said estate.
