DAYLIGHT SAVING SAVED
BY WILSON.
President Vetoes the Repeal Mea
sure—Admits That Measure
Causes Trouble to the Farms*;
Washington, August 15. —Presi-
dent today vetoed the biil repeal
ing the daylight saving law.
Declaring the pressing need of
the country was for production by
industry, the president said he
would be obliged to “balance one
set of disadvantages against an
other and decide which was the
more serious for the country. ’'
Trouble for Farmer.
The president said he returned
the bill without his approval with
“the utmost reluctance” because
he realized “the very considerable
and in some respects, very serious
inconveniences to which the day
light saving law subjects the far
mers of the country.”
The president’s message was
sent to Speaker Grillett, but when
an effort was made to present it to
the house Representative Blanton,
democrat, Texas, made a point of
no quorum and the house adjourn
ed without the message being read
This was the second time the
president had vetoed repeal of the
law by which the clocks are set
forward an hour on the last Sun
day in March and. turned ba*‘k an
hour the last Sunday in October.
The first veto was several weeks
ago, the repeal being attached as a
rider to the annual agricultural
appropriation bill.
White house officials and. mem
bers of congress could not recall
today a previous instance of a pre
sident having twice vetoed the
same bill. Efforts to pass the agri
cultural measure over the veto
failed in the house and then the
separate house repeal bill then
pending was passed by the senate.
Leaders in congress doubt that the
two-thirds vote necessary to pass
the repeal measure over the presi
dent’s heard can he obtained.
The President's Message.
The president’s message vetoing
the bill follows:
“To the House of Representatives.
“1 return this bill, H. R. 3854,
< An act for the repeal of the day
light saving law, ’ without my sig
nature, but do so with the utmost
reluctance. L realize the very con
siderable and, in some respects,
very serious inconveniences to
which the daylight saving law sub
jects the farmers of the country,
to whom we owe the greatest con
sideration and who have distin
guished themselves during these
recent years of war and want by
patriotic endeavors worthy of all
praise. But I have been obliged to
balance one set of disadvantages
against another and to venture a
judgement as to w'hich were the
more serious for the country. The
immediate and pressing need of
the country is production, increas
ed and increasing production, in
all lines of industry. The disorgan
ization and dislocation caused by
the war have told nowhere so
hfeavily as at the industrial centers
—in manufacture and in the many
industries to which the country
and Piie whole world must Look to
supply needs which cannot he ig
nored or postponed. It is to these
that the daylight saving law is of
most service. It ministers to econ
omy and to efficiency. And the in
terest of the farmer is not in all
respects separated Iron these in
terests. lie needs what the facto
ries produce along with the rest of
the world, lie is profited by the
prosperity which their success
brings about. Ilis own life and me
thods are more easily adjusted, L
venture to think, than those oi the
manufacturer and the merchant.
“These are the considerations
which have led me to withhold my
signature from this repeal. I hope
that they are considerations which
will appeal to the thoughtful judg
ment of the house and in the long
run t<- the thoughtful judgment of
the fa* lers of th country, who

ANOTHER AMERICAN HERO
BACK HOME; SINGLEHAND
ED HE TOOK 256 GERMANS.
Naturalized Greek Wounded and
a Prisoner, Neatly Led Enemy
Battalion Into a Trap.
Hercules Korgis. who i% a little
more than five feet in height and
weighs 112 pounds, the private
from Lynn, Mass., whose score
stands “256 Germans captured
single-handed,” is back from the
w r ar.
Hercules, a Greek by birthand
who has been an American only
about six years, comes bacn to his
adopted country wearing the
French croix de guerre and the
French medal of honor. His feat,
which deserves a place alongside
the achievements of Sergt. York,
was accomplished near Soissons.
Hercules, a tried and trusted
veteran of much hard fighting,
was put on an outpost with four
other men. The Germans jumped
in, and jumped into a real scrap.
After they had killed three of the
four men, they took Hercules,
wounded in the neck and leg, pri-
soner.
After being taken prisoner, Kor
gis found a German who could talk
Greek. Hercules immediately
worked on and through him. It
appeared that here was a drafted
American, who loathed America,
who hated the Amerieanarmy so
much that he wanted to help strike
a blow at it.
Hercules told the German offi
cers he would lead them to a point
in the American lines that was as
weak as an old woman after a six
day hunger strike.
Korgis then led ’em in. He con
voyed the German officers and men
to a place, where they had Ameri
can infantry in front of them,
American infantry behind them,
machine guns onTwo sides and ar
tillery reasonably close.
Then, lie explained the situation
to the Germans, asking them to
consider possible results if they
killed him. The Germans decided
to surrender—the whole 256 of
them—to one lone American pri
vate. He brought them all in as
prisoners.
