WINDER GEORGIA A JINT DISPUTE ABOUT COCA COLA. (Continued from fifth patio.) the greatest chemists and physi eiims in the United States, and tdie supreme court of the United States affirmed the decree. In his reply, Editor Shannon did not refer to this decision, but gave Editor Rucker a solar plexis that put him hors de coni hat for good, as follows: “Well, we’ll have a little friend ly “jint spute” with Brother Rucker, who says that it requires no courage now to tight whiskey, from which might be inferred that we. too. have recently crawled on the water wagon. Rucker does not intend t<> convey this idea, but the inference is easy. The first time we went to the polls to vote - the first vote we ever east was plaeed in : e ballot box forty-three years ago in Franklin county, and that vote was east for the prohibition candidate for president of the United States. Prior to that time, we held membership in the com munity temperance society. We have never known the effects of strong drink. We have never been under the influence of strong drink. We have been in the news peper business nearly twenty years and we have never inserted a whiskey advertisement. Long be fore we reached our majority, we fougnt for prohibition. We stood f,r prohibition when it was ex ceedingly unpopular and when the prohibitionists were mighty lone some. We do not belong to that class of prohibitionists, if such there tie. that preaches prohibition and stores the keg in the cellar. So much f or that. Now. as to coca cola. We do not drink it We have never advertised it, not because of conscientious scruples, but because we have never had the opportun ity We would today aec?pt an ad vertisement of coca-cola at our re gular rates, if it was tendered. The Free Press says that “Coca-cola is do ing Georgia a thousand times more harm than whiskey.’’ We do not believe a word of it. From our view point, there is not a word of truth in that statement. Coca-cola is not in a class with whiskey. Cos to the court rtcords for eidence. Whore is the court record to show that a single crime committed was ever produced by the use of coca cola? The records do not show such an instance, while the records of every court held in the land is crowded with crimes produced by the use of strong drink. How many men have gone home at night and heat their wives and children be cause 'ney used coca-cola? Not a single instance can he given. How many murders have hccu committ ed resulting from the use of coca cola" Not one. And does Brother Rucker know, that the records of all 'lie courts arc filled with such .•rimes committed while under the influence of strong drink? Dr. Powell, who for many years was at the head of the state sanitarium at Milleilgcville, stated, over his own signature, that during the years of his service thebe has not been one single case brought there, whose history was in the remotest degree connected with coca-cola. We present herewith the analysis of coca-cola : Sugar, in the forn* of syrup, 15.58. Faffein, derived from tea leaves, o.2t>. Phosphoric acid, 3.34. Citric acid, from lemon, 0.03. Flavorings, carmoel, etc., 4.36. Mineral matter —Ash, 0.01. Alcohol, from flavoring extracts. 0.75. Water, 92.845. Total, 100. The analysis shows that there is almost as much water in the drink as there is in a turnip. The analy sis also shows, that there is no more caffein in a glass of ooca cola than there is in a cup of coffee Then why not attack coffee, too? Why discriminate? Almost every body drinks coffee, and we have never heard of the asylum being tilled with coffee drinkers nor-jails with coffee drinkers, nor coca-cola drinkers. If we may accept the ver dict of chemists, coca-cola and coffee are on a parity. Tobacco is far worse than either. Wc witness ed the injection of a little nicotine from tobacco into a dog, and it killed the dog too dead to skin. Aside from its injurious effects, tobacco is positively filthy. It does not look like any decent man would use the filthy weed, but we do. We could go on indefinitely, but this is sufficient to allow Bro ther Rucker to understand our position. We are not fishing for minnows, like coca-cola. We prefer to tackle the big fish.—Lawrence ville News-llerald. State of Georgia, County of Bar row.
