NEW JERSEY MAN SAYS GEORGIA IS IDEAL IN CLI MATE AND PRODUCTS FOR RAISING HOGS IN QUAN TITIES. That Northeast Georgia is be coming recoznized as the garden spot of the state is evinced by the visit to these parts of F. S. \ an Neis of New Brunswick, N. J., Mr. Van Neis came here to in spect the soil and farms of north east Georgia for the purpose of moving here from New Jersey; in vest his money in northeast Geor gia soil and reap his share of tlie rich harvest now being enjoyed by in this section. Hog Raising on Big Scale. Although Mr. Van Neis believes in boosting tli eprice of king cot ton. as lie is a member of the agri cultural clan, however, his object in coming south is not to raise the fleecy staple, but, to raise boas and raise hogs on a scale never be fore dreamed of by the most en thusiastic hog raisers in this sec tion of the state. Opportunity Neglected. Mr. Van Neis made an automo bile trip over Clarke county in company with Professor Crabb, ol the department of soils in the State College of Agriculture and to say that he was agreeably sur prised at the progressiveness of Clarke county farmers would be putting it mild. As he looked over the ‘white fields which never fail in making the onlooker experience a feeling of jo/. Mr. Van Neis re marked to Prof. Crabb, “1 am wondering why you people have never gone into bog raising on an extensive scale before now. Id the fawners in tins section had begun hog raising a few years ago on the scale i am planning, and carried the proposition through with the same spirit of determination and zeal which characterizes their ag ricultural activities, this section of Georgia would be the richest in the state.” Climate Suited to Hogs. “You are better prepared to raise hogs than the people of New England. There they Ttre handi capped with ten months of frost during the year. Here you can run hogs into a pasture and let them graze on bermuda and alfal fa during these very months, and that fact attracts me to Northeast Georgia. Your climate is ideal for hog raising.” Mr. Van Neis proposes to raise pure bred hogs as well as feeders and also intends to raise a large crop of alfalfa. Alfalfa Makes Hogs. The farmers of northeast Geor gia have I Then very successful dur ing recent years in raising hogs, although they have not specializ ed. If the boll weevil ever arrives and experts say that they are com ing. and coming fast, the farmers lwill be forced to cut down their acreage in cotton. "Wherever alfal fa has been raised it has gained supporters and alfalfa ranks as one of the best feed crops for hogs The fact that Mr. Van Neis is One Dosen-SecondKanded, Slightly Vnd FORDS sale at Bell Home in edge of Winder on Bankhead Highway. W. F. Bell & Son favorably impressed with this sec tion as being suited for hog rais itig. will no doubt stimulate more interest among farmers of north east Georgia in planting more feed crops and in making preparations to launch hog raising on a more extensive scale.—Athens Daily Herald. THE BEST TIME YOU WILL EVER SEE TO SAVE MONEY. The World War lias brought to this country the greatest season of prosperity ever known here. While business in many countries, even outside the fighting zone, was tied up. times here were very prosperous. It will probably be a thousand years or more before our people ever again see such oppor tunities to make money. Such op portunities may never again come to us while the world stands. Have we made use of these op portunities? Some have done so. hut many may not have. Many wage earners have lost more time than ever before, because a living was secured $\ ith loss effort than before. Other wage earners have worked regularly hut have wasted their money. Some tenants have worked only enough to make ends meet, w hen they might have made money fast with proper effort. Other tenants have made money and wasted it when they might have bought homes with it. Only a few have worked regularly and saved all they could save. What is said of tenants is true of a great many land-owners. At the time when everybody ought to have made both their time and money count above all other times, we have let the traces hang slack. This is our time, but we do not seem to know it. These are op portunities. but we do not grasp them as we should. It is very clear that we have been missing our opportunities. We cannot now help the past but we should take care of the future. We should work all we can work and save all we can save. We should not let all the prosperity pass without our saving some thing. Will times change? Yes, they certainly will change. When will they change? We do not know, bnt we know they will change. The time may not he far away. After the pendulum swings one way for a while it will swing hack. People who do not work and save during this wave of prosper ity will see when it is over that they have acted very foolishly.— Smithfield News. TO THE TAX PAYERS OF BARROW COUNTY. The books are now open for the collection of taxes for 1919 and I respectfully ask that all pay by the 20th of December and save in trust and costs, as I expect after that date to move hack to the country. Yours to serve. A. M. Williams. THE BARROW TIMES, WINDER. GEORGIA SOUTH GEORGIA AND TOBAC CO. (From The Savannah Morning News.) “Some smoker” might have been a popular if not altogether elegant description of a meeting held at Nashville a few days ago when nearly seven thousand peo ple assembled to celebrate the for mal opening of the first tobacco warehouse for that section of the state. “Nashville and Berrien county got on the tobacco map of the state,” said one correspondent writing of the occasion which drew farmers and business men from not only all parts of Berrien, hut from Lowndes, Brooks, Irwin, Coffee and other counties. The tobacco warehouse at Nash ville is one of the pioneer houses that will be noted as the first of several hundred similar houses to he erected in the next few years. Tobacco is coming to he an item for large consideration in the di versified agricultural products of South Georgia. The farmers are learning how to select the proper varieties, how to prepare the land, how to sow the seed, transplant Special Offer!
