Chicago Opera Stars Baffled When
Ciccolini Tests the $3,000,000.00
Phonograph
That Ciccolini would score a great success as Alfredo in Traviata,
the season's initial offering of the Chicago Opera Association, was a
I'cregone conclusion. His career has been a series of triumphs.
On the following day, accompanied by Carolina and Virgilio Lazza
ri, respectively leading contralto and world-famed basso of the Chi
cago organization, Ciccolini called at a friend’s studio.
“Ah! here's a New Edison!" exclaimed the great tenor. ‘‘Let's
hear ourselves as others hear us." And they began playing their own
RE-CiaEATIONS. Finally Ciccolini inserted ‘' Marechaire, ’ ’ the Nea
politan street song which he sings with such vei've and spirit.
As the beautiful melody flooded the room Ciccolini. too, began to
sing.
A duet!" exclaimed Virgilio Lazzari. “And they're as like as two
peas. I doubt if I can tell them apart."
Clo ing his eyes he listened attentively. Ciccolini gradually reduced
the volume of his voice. Finally he ceased.
“Why don't you stop?" inquired his listener a moment later. "So
that I can tell the difference?"
Ciccolini and Signorina Lazzari burst into laughter. Virgilio Laz
zari, a ! tar of Grand Opera, with the sensitive tone perceptions which
that ’act implies, was forced to admit that he had been completely
baffled He could not distinguish artist from instrument.
Nor was this strange. Out of the vast audiences, totalling more than
2,('00,000 people, which have attended Edison tone tests not one per
soi has been able to distinguish the artist from the New Edison. And
this applies to instrumental renditions as well as to vocal. By the test
of direct comparison this wonderful phonopraph has proved its power
to RE CREATE the artist's voice or instrument with such fidelity
that the two performances are indistinguishable. The three million
dollars which went into its development was well expended.
THE NEW EDISON.
"The Phonograph with a Soul"
alone among devices for sound reproduction has ever been subjected
to the tone test. No talking machine, no other device could meet it...
