Ihe great blessings, vouch safed to us. lor which we devout ly give thanks, should arouse us to a fuller sense of our duty to ourselves and to mankind to see to it that nothing we may shall mar the completeness of the vic tory we helped to win. No selfishli purpose animated us in becoming participants in the world war, and with a like spirit ot unselfishness we should strive to aid by our example and hv our co-operation in realizing the en during welfare of all peoples and in bringing into being a world ruled by Iriendship and good will. Wherefore, I, Woodrow Wil son. president of the I'nited States *d America, hereby designate I Intraday, the li l ll l day of Novem ber next, for observance as a day ot thanksgiving and prayer bv my fellow countrymen, inviting them to erase on that day from their or dinary tasks and to unite in their Imiiics ami in their several places <l worship in a set ibing praise anil thanksgiving to (hxl, the author of all blessings and the Master of our ih .slii.ii s.'' It is impossible to say in just how many ways a local farmer’s organization can be helpful to its members. Here is one example. In the writer’s county a com pany of farmers operate a ware house. In charge of ibis warehouse as directors are some level-headed farmers with good business judge ment, who have also retained a good local lawyer as their attor ney. Into this community recently came some agents selling stock in a Florida soft phosphate mining company, and making all kinds of promises to prospective investors. The farmers in this community said to the agent: “Well, we should like to have the combined judgement of our best men about your proposition. We will get our hoard of directors to ineel at such an hour, together with our attor- ney, and you may come before them and tell them your proposal. Then if after their investigation they think it safe and wise for us to invest our money with you. we will do so.” 4'ho agent, of course, had to agree that this was a fair enough proposition and promised to meet the directors. But when the appointed time for the meeting came, be w as now here to be found, lie had skipped on to other pas lures where farmers were more gullible and less well organized! Just now when the woods are full of swindling, stock-selling ag ents. this sort of cooperation might be practiced to advantage in almost any county in the South. Progressive Farmer.
