It was my privilege, during the year
of 191S, to meet and discuss with you
many of the important matters and
thing* which at that time were attract
ing the attention of all the people of
the state.
Many of the issues, which were then
of importance to every patriotic citi

It will be my purpose, at appropriate
time, to discuss the issues fairly and
honestly.
I will thank the people of the District
for their confidence and support and,

Shortly after my election the in

I tad been elected was reduced by
legislation to approximately half it
was paying, when I was elected, and
at a time when a dollar had less than
half its former purchasing value.
1 will appreciate the support ot
all the people of the circuit, and prom
ise to the public the same vigorous,
faithful and corteous discharge of tho
duties of the office that I have endeav
ored to render during the present term.
Respectfully,
W. O. DEAN.

people with the suport of foreign na
tions and peoples; or to force compul
sory military training upon the country.

THE COLORADO POTATO
BEETLE.
The potato beetle is with us a
gain. Some think this fellow only"
cats off a few leaves, hence does
not do much harm. It should lie
remembered that the leaves of a
plant are its lungs, or as i1 were,
the kitchen of the plant where the
food taken up from the soil by the
plant is cooked, so the plant can
use "t. For this reason the yield
of pot itoes is reduced even when
a small portion of the leaves is de
stroyed by bisects or diseases.
The adult female may lay from
500 to 1000 eggs and the egg lay
ing period may extend over two
weeks. There are two or three
broods each year.:
The most effective method of de
stroying the potato beetle is by
spraying arsenate of lead, using
two pounds of arsenate of lead
paste( or one of powered) and 3
pounds of powered lime to 50 gal
lons of water. If a spray is not
available the insects may he suc
cessfully controlled by" dusting the
plant with powered arsenate of
lead used at the rate of one pound
to four pounds of air slaked lime.
The dust should he put on early
in the morning when the plants
are wet w'th dew. A common
Hour sack may l>o used in apply
ing the dust. If one has a large
field to <.lust, two rows at a time
may he dusted by suspending a
sack from each end of a pole and
walking between the rows. The
dust should he applied when the
first adult beetles are found and
at intervals of seveiTto ten days.
For other potato insects or dis
eases see or write me at Winder.
