Till-: BARROW TIMES. WINDER, GEORGIA.
To Our Friends:
Owing to tbe continued increase in operating expenses due to the
;:d\aiming prices of labor and material and high interest rates and
taxes, the Georgia Railway and Power Company has been forced- re
luctantly to apply to the Railroad Commission of Georgia for author
ity to increase its rates and fares. The Commission lias assigned the
application for bearing at Atlanta. Ga., on .June 8, 1020.
i lie ( ompany is now in its constructive era and its program pro
vides for the construction of additional dams, building new transmis
sion lines and modernizing and restoring existing lines, and for these
purposes must secure new capital, which camiol be done unless its
earnings are such as will insure the people from whom we must ob
tain financial assistance 1 hat their investment will lit* safe.
It would be impossible to encourage .investors to put their money
into extensions and improvements unless we can assure them of a
lair rate of interest, which cannot he done at tlie present rates, and
as the public will he benefilted by the additional facilities which will
attract new industries, their completion at the earliest possible mo
ment is to the public interest.
We are building for a greater North Georgia, investing millions
with a faith in the fairness of the people of our State, and believing
that their progress will keep pace with our constructive plans until
North Georgia will occupy a commanding position in the manufact
uring world.
If the present efforts to extend and enlarge the Company’s facil
ities are retarded, the development of the Northern part ot Georgia
will be delayed.
Believing that its interests are host served by serving the public
to the limit of its ability, and that it was its patriotic duty to help
solve the economic problems created by the war, the Georgia Railway
aud Power Company disregarded cost, continued its construction
work during the war period so as to meet the extraordinary demands
unexpectedly forced upon it by the shortage and high prices of coal.
AVe feel that your own experience will convince you ot the, ne
cessity of increased compensation to the Company for its service dur
ing these abnormal times, and trust we will have your fdeadly co-op
nation in obtaining it. and would appreciate an expression of the
views of the readers of this publication, by mail, addressed to the
