the south should work
FOR THESE BIG PLANTS.
Los Angeles became tlie indus
trial metropolis of the Pacific coast
a few days ago when the $20,000,-
000 new factory of-4iic Goodyear
Tire S. Rubber Company of Cali
fornia started operation just 10
months after ground was broken.
' The first tire was built by P. W.
Litchfield, vice president and fac
tory manager of the Akron com
pany. who made the long trip n est
for that purpose. Other high offi
cials of both Akron and Califor
nia companies participated in the
turning out of the first pneumatic.
Word was immediately telegraph
ed to Akron, where whistles were
blown and fitting observance made
of the interesting event. This tire
will lie placed in the company's
museum in its welfare building
the largest in the world.
The California company begins
with 2,000 employees, of which 700
are in the offices and 1.300 in the
factory. One half of the factory
employees were experienced tire
builders sent from Akron to train
the 7,000 men who will ultimately
be employed.
The new company has erected
many bungalows for its workers,
financing them in the same manner
that has enabled IH.OOO Akron em
ployees to enjoy comfortable
homes.
Adjoining the factory, an avia
tion field of 300 acres has been laid
out. with a large hangar for air
ships. This field will later he the
terminus of the company’s air line
between the Los Angeles factory
and its cotton plantation near
Phoenix. A viz.
Production on the first day was
f>o tires, but will increase to 7>oo
daily within a month. Capacity
production will be .7,000 tires a
day when the plant is in full op
eration.
Tt is setting time for capitalists
in the South to get some of the big
rubber plants that are helping to
make the west richer.
The South has too long overlook
ed the importance of the varied
industrial enterprises which aid so
much in giving employment and
adding to our wealth and prosper
ity.
"Winder has done well for its age
in establishing manufacturing en
terprises. but if we hope to con
tinue growing and becoming a
city of anv proportions, we must
pet more plants and encourage
those we already have.

STATEMENT FROM SCOT
JACKSON, FEDERAL AGENT
Athens, Ga., June 17th, 1920.
Mr. A. Sim Hill, Chiet of Police,
Winder, Oa., Dear Sir: —I have
just received your letter of June
15th relative to some rumors that
I had caught your wife and anoth
er lady hauling whiskey. This is
a willful falsehood and is so redic
ulous that decent people not
believe -it,
The receipt of your letter was
the first time that I had ever heard
of your wife’s name or that of
Mrs. M. E. Rogers being any way
connected with whiskey.
Some people try in different
ways to drag down the good name
of officers and their families and
this falsehood was started by just
such trash. Respt.,
Scott Jackson,
Federal Prohibition Agent.

worried look when you strike a steep grade. The “GREEN FLAG” keeps the
