KENTUCKY CASTS VOTE FOR
WOMAN FOR PRESIDENT
'Auditorium. San Francisco, July
5 —The first vote to be east for a
woman for the presidential nomi
nation came today from the Ken
tucky delegation.
• Chairman Stanley cast it tor
Alias Laura Clay, one of the wom
en of the delegation.
So far as convention observers
could remember, it was the first
vote cast for a woman in the con
ventions of either of the two gie.it
parties.
THE GREAT SAN FRANCISCO
CONVENTION.
(Prom the Cotton and Cotton Oil News
Dallas, Texas.)
The giants of Democracy in the
San Francisco convention hand
led unmercifully the pigmy oppo
nents of the peace treaty and the
covenant of the League of Nations.
The thunders oof the temporary
chairman’s logic terrified the af
frighted souls of such miserable
marplots as Reed, Lodge. Moke
Smith Harding and others, while
the lightning flash of wrath and
scorn from the permanent chair
man blistered and burned all it
fell upon.
The Chicago Republican conven
tion beside the San Francisco gath
ering of Democratic chieftains
was as a tallow candle in the blaze
of the noonday sun. AN hatever
may be the issue of the campaign,
the’patriotic spirit, the eloquence
and the inspiration that thrilled
the San Francisco convention into
bursts of rapturous applause, mark
an epoch in our history.
There was little bickering and
less selfish ambition in this Demo
cratic convention than in any such
gathering of any party in all the
past. The broad spirit of patriot
ism and of a broad love of hutnani-
ty brooded over the great gather
ing like a benediction as the dele
gates counseled together for peaw
on earth under the operation of a
righteous covenant of Nations.

PARIS BUTCHER SELLS LION
MEAT FOR LESS THAN BEEF
Few commentators upon the ap
palling shortage of foodstuffs in
Europe have been more striking
than the recent appearance in a
Parisian butcher shop of a lioness’
carcass. The steaks were costly,
bpt were actually sold at less than
belt’ the price of good beef and

animal is of little economic signifi
cance. however, as prospects for
a continued supply of such meat
