office, I shall bring to the performance
of its duties, many years of experience
in such work and an earnest desire to
execute the law conscientiously, fear
lessly and impartially.
I shall gratefully appreciate your
vote and support.

UNITED STATES SHORT FIVE
MILLION DWELLING HOUSES
Washington, Aug. 13..—Approxi
matelv 25,000,000 persons in the
United States are now living in
Itempoorary crowded and sometime
insanitary quarters, according to
officials of the United States House
corporation.
“ The nation is short more than
5. 000.000 dwellings and apart
ments,” said Chief engineer Chase
of the corporation today.
“All hope of improvement must
be deferred until next spring. The
building now has practically stop
ped. It will take the country live
years to catch up.”
The housing situation now is
more acute than it was at the close
of the war period when practical
ly all building had been halted for
three years, said Chaste. In only
a few cities has any building activ
ity gone on since the war ended.
“Builders now and pretty gener
ally since the armistice have found
it practically impossible to get ma
terials.”
