happiness to children throughout the

the entire present program of the Jun
ior Ked Cross ha< been framed under

for Citizenship Through Service for
others. Since the Junior Ked Cross is
tin* agency through which the Ameri
can Ked Cross reaches the schoolboys
Mini the schoolgirls, nil its activities
are designed to come within tin* regu-
lar school program, and without, creat
ing new courses or increasing the num
ber of studies to lend its aid in vitalise
ing tlie work of the schools.

The plan of organization of the Jun
ior Ked Cross makes the school—pub
lic, parochial and private —the unit,
not tlie individual pupils. Mutual serv
ice, helpful community work such ns
clean up campaigns, care of the sick,
promotion of health regulations, par
ticipation In civic and patriotic move
ments all these creative agencies de
signed to translate into life and action
tli** regular school program art- parts
ol' the machinery which the Junior lied
Cross places at the disposal of the
school authorities.
Graded study courses giving prac
tical methods of civic training, supple
mented by pamphlets and helpful sug
gestlons, are supplied to the local
schools hy the Junior Red Cross. An
elaborate plan for promoting an Inter
change of correspondence between chil
dren in different sections of the United
States as well as with children In for
eign lands is being devised and will
take a prominent place in the estab
lished classroom program.
In promoting the general cause of
child welfare, Red Cross courses in
home hygiene and care of the sick,
tirst aki, and dieting mny be estab
lished In all Junior Red Cross Aux
iliaries.
The Ideals and the objective of the
Junior Red Cross are embodied In the
pledge of service which the pupil lakes
when lie signs the membership roll and
pins on his coat the Junior’s badge.
The pledge which binds together serv
ice and citizenship reads:
“We will seek in all ways to live up
to tlie Ideals (lie Junior Red Cross
and devote ourselves to its service.
••We will strive never to bring dis
credit to lids, our country, by any un
worthy act.
“We will revere and obey our coun
try's laws and do our best to Inspire a
like reverence and obedience in those
about us.
“We will endeavor In all those ways,
us good citizens, lo transmit America
greater, better and more beautiful than
she was transmitted to us.”

RED CROSS ACTIVE
IN DISASTER RELIEF
When disaster hits a community—
fire, flood, earthquake, explosion, bad
wreck or tornado —the American Red
Gross can lie depended upon to follow
right at its heels with help for the
stricken people. Red Cross relief is
almost immediately forthcoming—food,
clothing, shelter and funds; doctors,
purses and special workers with long
experience In handling similar trouble
elsewhere.
During the last year, ending June 30,
there was an average of four disasters
a month in the United States. One
hundred and fifty communities iu
twenty seven slates suffered. The
largest and most destructive of these
were the tidal w a vie ai Corpus Ohrlsti,
Texas, and tornadoes In Mississippi,
Louisiana. Alabama, Georgia, Ohio,
Indiana and Illinois.
In these events of horror 850 per
sons were killed, 1,500 were injured,
13.000 were made homeless, about 30,-
000 families needed help, the property
loss was nearly $100,000,000 and al
most $1,000,000 In relief funds, not In
cluding emergency supplies was ex
pended.
To the sufferers from all disasters
during the year, the American Red
Cross sent $120,000 worth of sup
plies. 110 Red Cross nurses and seven
spei'ial relief trains. To meet the
needs of the stricken, the organization
set up ten relief stations, operated
thirty food canteens and as tpany
emergency hospitals. One hundred
and twenty five lied Cross chapters
gave disaster relief service.

Auto Polo, the exciting sport that is
put on at the Southeastern Fair, Octo
ber 16-26th, will be a feature every day
and night. The contest, which is
waged between two teams on Ford
cars, especially made for Auto Polo,
is one that holds the grand stand
breathless from start to finish. The
cars turn over, lose wheels and col
lide in a manner that puts pep into
the performance from start to finish.

BAILEY IN TEXAS PRIMARY.
Dallas, Texas, August 29.—Pat
M. Neff defeated Joseph Bailey,
former senator from Texas, in the
race for the gubernatorial nomina
tion, according to returns tabulat
ed late today by the Texas election
bureau from Saturday’s run-off
primary. With 401.070 votes ac
counted for, the election bureau
announced these figures: Neff, 2J7-
lfia; Bailey, 164.505. Neff’s major
ity more than 72,000.
Ihiiley made the race on the plat
form of opposition to league of
nations.
