OFFICIAL ORGAN OF BARROW COUNTY Christian Amer ica and the Real Christmas Spirit The Plea of Unprecedented Suf fering in Famine-Stricken Lands. At the Christmas season, the most seltlsh of men arc apt to loo : en up a little and enter into the true Christian spirit of giving and good cheer. And true charity is always manifested in the care of the nearest neighbor before we turn to the need that is farther away. Nobody in America will go hungry this Christmas tide, if any body knows about it. Recently an appeal was made in our own city for several worthy families, where there was no man to provide for the widows and ehil dren, and the response was enough and to spare. The Sunday schools of Winder are planning to contrib ute a Christmas tree for the chil dren of homes that good St. Nich olas might not otherwise find, and even the colored children are not to he forgotten. It does not take much to brighten the life of a child and even though times ore hard, surely that, is no good reason to take the Christmas joy from the children of these homes. The Christian people of America { have on their hearts a heavier} burden than merely the poverty I at mu* own doors. We dart- you to find a worthy home where thare. i will be suffering if the need is known to those who have imbibed the Christmas spirit from the Christ of Bethlehem. But the Christmas spirit is a bigger thing than that. It knows no hounds of race or creed, for its author is the Christ who gave Himself for the life of the whole world. Selfish ness and prejudice are its chief op posite. Its creed is that of Hie good Samaritan, whom Jesus praised because lie treated one of an alien race as liis neighbor, and forgot his racial prejudice when he heard the cry of need. And Christ speaks of this os the surest test of a true disciple. It was not not the charity of a man to his next door neigh boK but. a good deed done by u Samaritan to a Jew. This Christinas, our well-laden tables will he haunted by shad ows. True we, ourselves, ore in a state of financial crisis, and yet our harvest has been one oi Hie most bountiful we have ever known. We have bread enough and to spare. But the Christmas Star will shine upon the land of Christ with its hundreds of thous ands of Armenian orphans, on the war-scarred lands of Europe* where countless little children, according to M**. Hoover, are dying of hun ger ond cold, and where men and women are dropping dead upon the streets. If would he a Christ mas feast if they could obtain a crust of bread. In < liinu a section that contains forty million people is in the grip of such a famine as the world has never known. 0 hmm* to erv hard times in Ameri ca when literally millions in these less fortunate lands would be thankful for the scraps from our ♦ able. Have \v<> no pity? Did Cod bestow, ou us these blessings to be used for ourselves alone, while his other children go naked and hungry in the bitter cold? The Christmas cash offering of the various churches of Winder- is asked for this imperative cause, and will be divided according t< the real need. Every cent will actually go toward saving lives Ip will go through channels where ev ery petuiy will fa* accounted for. ...SOCIETY... MRS. J. P. CASH ENTERTAINS. On Saturday afternoon, Mrs. J.
