THE WOODS
BY DOUGLAS MALLOCH
DOWN GRADE.
YES, boy. I know —you do not
think;
You only hear the glasses clink
And feel the bogus joy of drink.
Life looks all summer through a glass;
The whisky road Is green with grass—
Hut life and summer both will puss.
It’s easy now to drink or not.
To drink u little or a lot;
But after all your drinking, what?
May It not happen ere the grave
The thing you laugh at you will
crave?—
The master will Income the slave?
God ! I have seen them: Boys like you,
The frollckers of fighting crew.
Who never thought and never knew.
Who took the road that dips and
gleams,
That runs ahead of singing streams
(Yet somehow never downward
seems).
With this same foolish passion played,
The same old merry journey made,
Who took the road of easy grade—
Till night came on, till sank the sun,
'Pill shadows gathered one by one
Around the path, and day was done.
( Twas then they turned; but now the
hill
"Was high behind them, and the rill
Within the valley dark and still—
Around, the level of the plain;
Above, a rocky path of pain
To climb, If they would rise again
I tun no preacher called to preach;
1 urn no teacher fit to tench
You younger men of better speech.
Yet I have walked the merry rond
Where laughing rivers downward
flowed.
And climbed again with all the load.
With all the load a man acquires
Who follows after his desires
Until he finds his lusts are llurs,
|
(Until he finds, as find he will,
The peace, the Joy his age to fill
Lie left behind hint on the hill.
My preaching Is not perfect, Jack;
let truth, nt least, It does not lack—
For I have been there boy. and hack

A RARE TREAT
Those who were so unfortunate
as to miss the lecture given by
Mrs. Maude B. Perkins on Monday
night Feb. 7, at the Christian
church, under the auspices of the
W. C. T. 11., missed one of the fin
est opportunities that lias come to
Winder in many a day. And not
only did they miss a wonderful
lecture, but they missed some of
the best music we have had the
privilege of hearing for a long
time. Mrs. Land and all those
who assisted deserve much praise
for their fine work.
On account of the severe storm,
the audience was small, but those
We have set the woods on fire and are burning out the boll weevils. ,We are
selling the goods. We are not going out of business but are really just getting in business.
Have bought several thousand dollars worth of goods this week at very low
prices, to let go in this sale. We have all hit it hard this time, and it is no time to try to
make money, but the greatest time in history to help each other. We have almost been
robbed of our cotton crops and I do not blame the farmers for not selling their cotton at
these prices, unless they can buy something else as cheap as cotton with the money.
We will have to buy close this year in order to make ends meet and we are in position
to give you prices that will astonish you. If you have not attended this sale lam sure
you have heard of it and will come before it is over. We are going to help put old Bar
row over the top this year. We want to help you and if you trade with us you can rest
assured that we will make it profitable for you. Look at our record since we have been
in your locality and if we have been your friend, trade with us, if not trade with some
one else.
We are cantinueing to sell 15 pounds of sugar to the dollar and if you have not
got your 15 pounds, if you will drop us a card we will try to keep it for you. We want
to give everydody a chance at this and will ask that when you come for your sugar be
prepared to trade some more for we have other things as cheap as sugar.

who braved the rain felt richly re
paid for their efforts.
Mrs. Perkins said the fight for
prohibition-and morality are by
no means finished, and that the
rising geheration has some tre
mendous problems to face which
can only he met by clean, trained
organized leadership among the
young people of today.
The forces of evil are thorough
ly organized and have unlimited
wealth behind them, and only or
ganized righteousness can cope
with them. She pictured the ef
fects of the cigarette habit and the
social evil, stressing the results
not simply on the individuals
themselves, but also on their chil
dren who shall come after them.
She appealed to the young peo
ple to face their problems frankly
and fearlessly, quoting: “Ye shall
know the truth, and the truth
shall make you free.”
At the close of her lecture, Mrs.
Perkins asked the young people
who were interested in the Young
People’s Branch of the W. C. T. U.
to remain; and after a brief talk
on the pins and methods of work
in the orgnization, she organized
a local branch which immediately
elected the following officers
President, Mayo; Vice-President,
Miss Frances Hubbard. Miss
Ora Lee Camp is the Director.
The next meeting will he held
at the home of Miss Camp on Ste
vens St., next Tuesday night, Feb.
15, at 7:30 promptly. Each mem
ber has promised to try and bring
one new r member, and all young
people between the ages of six
teen and thirty are invited.
The account of Mrs. Perkins’
visit to Winder would he quite in
complete if mention wasn’t made
of her wonderful talk at the school
house on Tuesday morning. This
talk made a very deep impression
on pupils and teachers. President
A. W. Van IToose of Shorter col
lege. Rome, was present at Chapel
that morning, and Prof. Cash in
vited him to spek after Mrs. Per
kins had finished. He responded
that he would not attempt to make
a speech following Mrs. Perkins,
and added that she visited Shorter
only last week and made, not one
of the best, but the very best ad
dress that had ever been given
there.
Those who were privileged to
hear her Monday and Tuesday
morning can certainly belive that
