Do the people read the Jacksonian?
I beg the privilege of rising that 1
may answer that they certainly do
l'lease take a peep at the shop yards
of those who have' been advertising in
the Jacksonian and you will And them

We could not fail to be deeply im
pressed with the temperance sermon
on last Sunday by Rev. C. W. Wil
lingham. With Revs. 8. P. Wiggins
and C. W. Willingham in Jackson
with their batteries turned on the
1 quor forces, we may rest assured
chat the scheme being now planned
to put a dispensary in our town, will
die a-borning, We note that the en
thusiasm manifesred Just year in sub
scribing to support the Anti-Saloon
League has somewhat waned.
We think we can give some reasone
for this. At least we are reminded of
what happened last year. A big rally
of the Anti-Saloon League wad adv.-i
--tißed to take place in the Court House.
We. who had been paying up our
quarterly subscriptions to the sup
port of the League, met and entered
into the spirit of the meeting. Many
splendid temperance speeches were
made. After much enthusiasm hid
been aroused one of the speakers
made a motion that the League pro
ceed to enroll membership, but the
’boss” of the meeting said, ‘ We aru
not ready yet for that.” Then after
telling the meeting how much he was
delighted over the out-look of things
the Jesus High Priest. (?) of the out
fit said to tne assembly, “You will
now phase retire, as we” (about
eight or ten of tho elect) “are going
to have a meetirg.”
Those who had paid in their money
and thought they weie members of
the League, had to skidoo and the
‘bops” we were afterwards told, pro
ceeded to tell the boys how they
must go home and fix their district to
defeat a certain candidate. Too this
samo “boss” of tho Anti-Salooi
League paid as much as anybody else
lo the fund raised to buy votes and
debauch negroes at the polls to bond
the town for water-works.

You need not read the Jacksonian,
bud. There are nine hundred others
tn the County who do read it and
some of them will tell you about it.
After you and Acnias, in hades, have
drawn straws for the cham
pionship, the people will still be
eading the Jacksonian. We will
.et have the pleasure of writing a
jout the good (?) deeds you did—

The doctrine of purgatory was once
discussed by the bishop of Waterford
and Father O'Leary. It is not likely
that the former was convinced by the
arguments of the latter, who, however,
closed It very neatly by telling the
bishop. "Your lordship may go farther
and fare worse.”
