The following lines by Longfellow
are doubtless true:
If we could read the secret hirtorj
of our enemies, we should find in
each man’s life sorrow and suffer ng
enough to disarm all hostilities.
Never till evil of a man if you do
not know it for a certainty ; and if you
know it for a certainty, remember
that “blessed !s he that taaeth not
up a reproach against his neighbor.”
—Enterprise-Gazet to
A mans private sins are his priva e
property, and the Book says: “be
sure your sins will find you out,” and
that we presume without assistance
from the Hinners neighbors. But.
When the evil is of a man in a public
place, or when his acts effect his fel
low man, then everyone should con
demn his evil acts in such terms that
will make him ashamed to be seen a
mong good men. His evil deeds
should be shouted from the housetop
so often and so loud that he will seek
for quarters where people come near
er down to a level with him, if such
place can be found.

something ought to be done and done
at once. It las been proposed that
the people “join our commissioners
in a line of economy and by this, and
this alone raise from county the bur

key note to the t line, and if somebody

it economy for the Commissioners
to issue a wairunt to their attorney

that were never rendered? Was that
economy? Someone answer please.
Is that economy? The people are be

Is there a prejudice on the part o
the country people against Jackson?
T.tis statement is often made in the
hearingof the writer, but we are com
pelled to say that the word “preju
dice” is not the word to express just
what you mean. The better word
would be “greivance, ’
Boys, they, this fast dying town
ring, have played you for a sucker.
Some of you have nibbled and Home
been caught, bur, thank God, most
of you are waking up to the game.
When your interest comes in con
tact with the interest of this preda
tory gang you don’t stand any more
show than a.“nigger”at a lynching.
The favored class in Jackson are
assessed but little for taxes and they
return their property for County tax
ation as it is assessed. You have tc
oome up to the lick-log, salt or ni
salt, and your property bears, by far,
more than itß equal part of the tax
burdens of the County. “This is a]
right”, the ring says, “they do not
belong to our crowd.” Boys, let noi
your hands hang down nor your kneei
quake, there is a day coming when
this will all be righted. There is a da.'
corning when the penetentiary will
receive its own and your wrongs cor
rected. The day when men lay claim
io honesty because they escape jail if
fast passing, A technical honest life
will not satisfy the demands of the
people as it formerly has done.
The day has overtaken us whei
men, to satisfy the demands of the
times, must be honest for the sake of
honesty, and a mere technical hones
ty wiil not suffice.
The world is demandlngclean hand*-
in private, commercial ond official
walks of life, with such strictness ai
it has never done before. The time
has come when you cannot lie and de
ceiee people in business and expeci
for your business to continue to run.
You cau’t parade before the public as
a competitor, deluding and d>ceivinf
the people, when, as a matter of fact
you are not a competitor. There was
a time when this was winked at and
tne people culled it “sharp practice’’,
but now they cull ic deception, hyp
ocrisy. fraud, untruth, guile and
corruption.
It takas a brave heart to push the
pec which will unmask the deception
and guile which has been practiced
upon the people of Butts County,
t hreats of death have already come
to the ears of Tom and Jerry, but 1
say to those would-be nerveless assas
sins, that you can murder Tom and
Jerry, but you can not obliterate the
truth, lb w.ll remain to dutnj and
haunt you. No man has ever walked
the path to the discovory of truth,
but with bleeding feet.
If I a martyr for the truth
of how the people have been deceived
and deluded, let me be. Nothing do I
hunger for like such a death.
In the language of a one who walks
before trod and man blameless, we
say: <‘A bad man that modestiv
covers his face is always pitied ; but
one that brazenly tries to trample
down the moral sense of a communi
ty forfeits sympathy and invites, yea,
compels crit cism.”
Now, here comes‘‘Another District
Heard From.” You don’t sign any
name. That is about the only wis
dom your article shows. If I did not
possess any more brain than you de
monstrate you possess I would write
as fatherless of a name as you do.
You are mistaken my nameless frieud
when you say “Tom and Jerry has it
iu for Mr. J. R. Carmichael.” Not
a bit of it. 1 “have it in for” such
misguided, deluded and muttsn- head
ed ignoramuses as .you—such beguil
ed willingly beguiled monsters.
Yon .ask: "By what authority do
we use the names of llr. Knowles and
Dr. Htmphreys?”
Dr. Humphreys nor Mr, Knowles
at# responsible for th# use of their
names,
Tom and Jerry has stated facts out
of which incideatially the names of
the'gontlcmen are connnected. Have
they , you or any one else a pattern
right on the truth? I Dever made the
facts. Your adorable boss Johnie
made them and when 1 desire to use
them to refute a statement made by
vou or your kind I mean to do so.
You ask: “Have you the court pa
pers to prove the Knowles affair?”
You mean about .7. R Carmichael
pleading the statute of limitation to
escape paying the Koowle’s claim?
Suppose I should tell you that I have
them? You are so incredulous w hen
the recoru of your boss is at stake
you would not accept my statement.
