jraNT^fe* PfaWr CLEANING SEEDS OF PULP. To clean tomato or cucumber seed of pulp, tie them in a cloth and knead and squeeze and rub them around in there thoroughly. Untie and open the cloth and rinse off the loose pulp or pick out the larger particles and drj> the seed on cloth.—ll. L. Dick inson, in The Epitomist. . RICH FORAGE CROPS. Here is a mixture that is frequently sown and which makes a rich forage crop: oats, Canadian peas, corn and clover. This may be sown as late as the latter part of July and still do quite well. The rape and clover should not, however, be sown togeth er with the heavy seeds; lightly, har row them in after the grains have been drilled in. RETAINING FERTILITY. One of the most important matters for the farmer to look out for is the maintainance of fertility of his farm. He should be very careful to not cheat the soil. If the farmer pays strict attention to this he may rest assured that his farm in turn will feed himself and family. lam con fident that intensive farming whether conducted on a large or small area is much the most satisfactory, and this method is the one that will keep the farm from running out. In fact, the soil may be improved by a judic ious system of rotation of crops, in tensive culture and the application of stable manure supplemented by a little commercial manure.—F. LL Dow. CATTLE AND FERTILITY. The successful cattle grower of Shelby County, Indiana, Mr. J. D. Douglas, is a thorough believer in silage for cattle feeding, along with corn fodder and hay, though when it comes to finishing beef cattle his chief feed is corn. Speaking of farm fertility, he says that with feeding forty head of cattle he can cover forty acres of his land with a light coat of manure, which increases the corn yield eighteen to twenty bushels per acre. Here is the testimony of a practical cattle feeder on the value of manure. He spreads the manure on the land before it has lost any of its value, and thus saves it entirely for fertilizing his lands. Such ex perience from a practical source should be worth a good deal to farm ers generally, hnd it all supports and enforces the lessons on fertility which we have lately published from sev eral of the State e?cperiment stations. Mixed live stock and grain farming is the ideal way of not only keeping up fertility, but of increasing it, for barn yard' manure is a perfect fertil izer.—lndiana Farmer. If the Builders’ Exhibition at Olym pia had possessed no other point of special appeal to the housewife, the exhibits of window frames and sashes •would alone have sufficed to make it worth her while to £o there and study them. There were several types of revolving sash window frames easily manipulated, enabling the pane to be swung inward or outward for cleaning purposes, but it was the fold ing casement which appealed to the common sense of every one as being the ideal thing in window fittings.— London Tribune.
