it ligitimato fruits. Last week the
Connell held a meeting to deal spec
ially with this question, and decided
that every dog running loose in Jack
son should wear a inuzzl . I his was
a proper step for the city Pa s to
take, and though a little slow in tak
ing it yet wo wdl all applaud them
for taking it, and now if the ordi
nance is rigidly enforced, Pareuts
will not feel any uneasiness when
their children are on the streets, a
serious evil will he remedied, and
much friction between neighbors will
bo avoided.

Before Su;y begun the biogmpby
she let fall a remark now and then
concerning my character which show

In the record which we kept of the

HOT SHOT
Tom and Jekry.
Of all the obstacles in the way of
civic progress to the coveted goal of
perfection, Done is so difficult and so
persistent as “The ring.”
Whenever any municipality falls
into the hands of a “ring,” growth
ceases and contentment i9 at an end.
“The ring” is a conscientiousless
agregation of a few men who have
worked themselves up to a belief that
they are the whole “cheese,” with
the knife thrown in, and have a per
fect right to say : “Get out of the way
you poor folks, niggers and Jews for
we are coming.”
“The ring” knows no gratification
except to satisfy its own greed and to
feather its own rest, Human na
ture, untouched by the flow of Ual’
Vary’s criiaaoa tide has always, and
will continue to be, exacting, despot
ic and tyrannical, ‘‘The fear of the
Lord ist he biginning of wisdom.”
This is true now— has always beep
true and will forever be true. “The
ring” Hoon comes to know no “tear
of the Lora,” and law is trampled un
der foot and regard for love and con
sideration for their fellows L
thrown aside.
Asa rule but one thing breaks
up “the ring” and that is, an out
raged and mistreated public, who re
volt and come like a mighty ava
lanche against it and crush it with
their blood bought ballots. Let me
say to every son of Adams race, BE
NOT AFRAID. Your grievance il
well founded and your cause, if just,
will be upheld by the hand of the
Mighty One. Have faith in your own
cause. Believe strong enough in your
own position to take a firm stand for
its principles. Unless a man’s faith
in his own position is strong enough
to euuble him to fight for it himself,
the world's testimonial concerning
him will be given in tones of disap
pointment.
One man of mediocre mind and av
erage ability, who has learned the po
tency of the magic words “I believe;
I can ; i will,” is worth a dozen phy
sical and intellectual giants whose
life motto is “1 am afraid.”
When fear btC-imea even a tempo
rary resident of the soul, determina
tijn departs, the will is paraiized.
courage is forgotten, and ambition
dies a slow and painful death from
starvation. The world has been rob
bed of many an artist, many a sculp
tor, many a musician, many an ora
tor, and many a statesman, by rea.
sou of tne subtle blandishments of
fear. Talent is a useless thing, and
opportunity but an idle hour for him
whose heart has become inoculated
with this deadly virus.
What need for Tom and Jerry to
fear? Does he not know that the
rights of the common people are ig
nored and daily the safe guards of the
law of right, and the law of love, and
the law of the land is brushed aside
to suit the selfish ends of “the ring?’’
We know our grievance is weil
founded, we know we have studiously
adhered to FACTS, and we know the
poor are being made to carry an un
just burden of taxes while the rich
favored few aod ‘the ring 'are toting
the tail end of the log. Keep up the
fight? Certainly we mean to keep
knocking at the public conscience till
the people are freed or driven into
abject slavedom at the hands of ‘the
nog" This same ring tried to domin
ate, last year, Butt’s seat in the Leg
islature and dictate to the County as
to who should live in the Court
House.
The capacious maw of "the ring"
never satisfies its hunger. The more
the people feed it, the hungrier it
grows, and the more domineering in
its relation to the public. We ask by
what argument can the public be re
fused! the information it desires in
reference to the assessment of the
real estate in Jackson? None ex
cept “WE ARE IT" and the public
can go where it doesn’t snow.
Oh, if we could oaly get those as
sessment books I Wewould then show
to the public who are carrying tbe
tax burden of the town which was
created by loading a lot of niggers
with mean liquor and carraling them
over night like so many Texas steers
and voting them for bonds, which fas
tened a debt on the widows and un
born children of Jackson.
The most disgusting sight I ever
beheld was to see the Mayor of Jack-
Bon. a white mjin, march to the polls
with two niggers, one on each side of
him, and all three lay their bollots,
one on the other, in the box for
bonds, when neither has as much
real estate to tax as a grave-jard lot.
As I watched them walking side by
aide I wondered which was beiDg lift
ed on the social plain, the nigger or
the wnite man.
It is time for an outruged public to
THINK. Your head wus not made
exclusively for hat rack. In it are
brains, and put those brains to thin! -
ing for yourself, and not let the man
who pays you daily, weekly or month

MADE BY
Dr. J. B. WATKINS,
SOLD EVERYWHERE. Jackson, Ga.
Autry and Erichsen, Tonsorial Parlors.
Where can there be found
for a town the size of Jackson
a barber shop that, for excel
lency in every respect, one
which will surpass the parlors
of Jno. Autry and Albert
Ericlison? They are the very
cleverest and best fellows go
ing and can, either of them,
give you such service.that will
tickle you to death. Besides
they have Jim Blackburn and
Lem W hitten with them and
they can’t be beat as workmen,
nor excelled for cleverness as
men. The shop is kept in
ship-shape condition. A shop
run, and work done by white
men is far superior to the
hops we ate accustomed to
find run by that class of citi
zens that know bnt little about
cleanliness It is real pleasure
able to be shaved by a white
man, who is clean in work and
character as well as cantrast
with a workman otherwise.
Mr. Autry is a loyal member
oi the Presbyterian church
while Mr - Erichsen worships
at the Methodist Church The
other two named are lovers of
the Baptist church.
J ackson should be proud of
such men and the character of
business they do. Mr. Autry
has already bought him a
home in Jackson, while Mr*
Eriohsen is on the lookout
for one. Patronize them
you will go there again ~ w#
