FOR killing husband
Mrs. Ethel Blair is Found Guilty in Co
lumbia, S. C., Court With Recom
mendation to Mercy.
Mrs. Ethel W. Blair, charged with
the murder of her husband, M. V.
Blair, a conductor on the Columbia,
fewberry and Laurens railroad, in
January last, was convicted of man
slaughter in Columbia, S. C., with a
recommendation to mercy.
Inasmuch as the verdict was not
reached until noon Sunday, sentence
was postponed.
Mrs. Blair, who is about thirty years
6f age, and the mother of two chii-
Iren, is an unsually handsome wo
man and stood well in the community.
When Mrs. Blair was brought Into
the court room there were no visible
signs of the ordeal that she ha= passed
through, but, on hearing the verdict,
she fainted and had to be lifted from
the court room.
Within an hour after the verdict,
Mrs. Blair had recovered sufficiently
;o be taken to the county jail.
On the 16th of last January McCul
ey W. Blair, conductor on the road
jetween Columbia and Laurens, was
shot to death at his home on Marion
street in Columbia. The fatal wound,
t was charged, was inflicted by Mrs.
31air.
Columbia was thoroughly shocked
>y this great tragedy. At the inqui
sition made by the coroner there was
startling evidence and the wife of the
leceased was placed under arrest. A
erm of court has intervened, but in
;erest has been none the less flagging,
md this tragedy is still fresh in the
ninds of the people of the state.
Captain Blair was 53 years of age,
lis wife 30. He was a victim of w
errible disease of the stomach which
■equired constant medical treatment.
There was apparently no affinity be
ween the two. The homicide pre
sented many points of interest, not
ilone from the criminal side, but from
he psychological. Evidence submit
ed shows that Mrs. Blair appreciated
he lack of affinity between herself
nd her husband. Three brothers
narried three sisters, and two of the
itliers met death by violence.
In the most sensational trial of the
ear only a day was required. The
ury in the case assisted very ma
erially by denying itself of several
rivileges.
;| The prosecution produced no evi
dence to prove the infidelity of the
Rife, although there were insinuations
Bi the testimony. And on the other
■and, the defense's witnesses contra*
■icted contradicted nearly everything
■> Vvhich they had testified at the in
■uest.
fl Mrs. Blair, who was not required to
■lake any statement at the inquest,
■ut nevertheless made at that time
■ declaration which she conlradict-
Id in several particulars, declared
bat she had no recollection of some
He tails of her statement on the night
Hf the killing. Mrs. Neal, another
■cry important witness in the case,
Henied seme statements she had made
Ht the inquest.

• “My three ehildrer had eczema for five
months. A little sore would appear on the
head and seemed very itchy, increasing
day after day. The baby had had it about
a week when the second boy took the dis
ease and a few sores developed, thein the
third boy took it. For the first three
months I took them to the N — Dispen

Then used Cuticura Soap and Cuticura

Grow Lettuce at Dinner.
“Yes,” said a florist, "I can work
miracles in my business. For instance,
I cau grow you lettuce while you wait
—sweet, crisp lettuce that you may
eat for your dinner with the broiled
spring chicken.
“I do it in this way. I take a hand
ful of lettuce seeds that have been
soaked over night in alcohol, and I
plant them in a box containing three
inches of loam and quicklime. 1 water
this soil, and in ten minutes the seeds
burst. In twenty minutes tiny leaves
push through the earth. The leaves
grow and multiply. In an hour they
are as big as half-dollars. Then you
may pluck and cat them. They are
delicious —a fairy salad.
“Sometimes, when I give a dinner
party, I have one of those little pre
pared lettuce beds in the center of the
table. The guests see the lettuce
grow, and when the time comes for
the salad course, there is their salad
blooming before them, all ready for
them to pluck.”—New York Press.
Witness Knew New York.
The witness was beginning to weak
en under the fierce cross -examina
tion of the plantiff's lawyer. Twice
he had told his story through with
out contradicting himself in any of
the details. The case was a suit for
damages against a street railway for
injuries received in an accident.
“Are you familiar with the locality
of the accident?” snapped the law
yer.
“Yes,” replied the witness, show
ing signs of fatigue.
“Tell the jury what business places
stand on the four corners of Ninth
avenve and Fiftieth street.”
The witness fidgeted.
“Four liquor stores,” he ventured.
The lawyer looked blank, for the
witness, who was familiar with New
York City in general, had guessed
right.—Washington Post.
