A NEW PARTY
IN THE ARENA
Rational Leagues ol Independents
are Getting Together,
CONFERENCE IS HELD
Delegates from Thirty States Meet in New
York and Plans of Organization
are Outlined.
The organization of a national In
dependence League was decided upon
at a meeting in New York Friday of
representatives of state Independence
Leagues and others who are in sym
pathy with the objects of these leagues
as outlined in state or local platforms.
The national body will be a solidifi
cation of minor leagues existing or
yet to be formed. Its alms are po
litical in opposition to the republican
and democratic parties, which the
league promoters declare are domi
nated by corporation interests and no
longer are representative of the peo
ple.
Friday’s conference was held at Car
negie hall, where some 200 men, said
to represent thirty states, met at the
invitation of * the local Independence
League, and tvere addressed by Wil
liam Randolph Hearst, the gubernato
rial candidate last fall of the Inde
pendence League and democratic par
ties in New York state. Before his
endorsement by the democratic state
convention and subsequent defeat by
Governor Hughes, Mr. Hearst was the
municipal league’s candidate for maj l '-
or and was beaten by Mayor McClel
lan, the democratic nominee.
Preceding the business meeting the
participants were given an informal
reception by Mr. Hearst at the Gilsey
house, where most of those from out
of-town stopped.
At the hall, afternoon and evening
sessions were held, the feature of the
afternoon being the address of Mr.
Hearst, who said that the conference
had been called to discuss the advis
ability of forming a national Independ
ence League. He told of the suc
cess of the league in New York, Mas
sachusetts and California, and urged
the formation of a minor league in
every state and the union of all in a
general body. The republican and
democratic parties, he said, were hope
lessly in the control of corporation in
terest. They failed, he said, to truly
represent the people, and a third par
ty was sorely needed. There were
other speeches, after which two com
mittees, one on organization and an
other to prepare a platform outlining
the aims of the national body, were
appointed.

Three men were killed instantly in
New York Friday by the explosion of

Mrs. Flatdweller Enlightens Mr. Flat
dweller on the Subject.
Mrs. Flatdweller has a bad cold;
one of those long, lingering colds; and
lately she has hadptd add to her dis
comforts, some coughing spells; and
Mr. Flatdweller, has’tried to be very
sympathetic; and when he hears
somebody coughing in the fiat over
head he says;
‘ Hello, there’s somebody coughing
upstairs, now.”
‘‘Man or woman?’’ says Mrs. Flat
dweller.
“Man or woman?” repeats Mr. Flat
dweller, ‘why, how should I know?
‘And he adds with what is intended to
be pleasant good humor; “I can’t see
through the ceiling and the floor, you
know.”
“You don’t have to,” Mrs. Flat
dweller says. “I should think you
could tell that by the sound of the
cough; they don’t cough anything
at all alike.”
“They don’t?” says the astonished
Mr. Flatdweller, “what’s the differ
ence?” and then says Mrs. Flatdwel
ler:
“Why, one coughs with a man’s
voice, and the other coughs with a
woman’s voice.”
And at that Mr. Flatd-weller said
nothing aloud; but he said to himself
that that was the first time he ever
knew that the sex of an unseen
cougher could be told by the sound of
the cough.—New York Sun.

Contract For Canned Meats Flaced in
Chicago—British Wffr Office Has
Every Confidence in the Slone
yard Product.
Another large contract for tinned
meats for the British Army has been
placed with Libby, McNeill & Libby,
of Chicago, through the Director of
Supplies Department of the British
War Office. This contract was a com
petitive affair, England, Canada, Aus
tralia and Brazil entering with ten
ders. It was quality and method of
packing that got the Chicago firm
the business. General Clayton, of the
War Department, in an interview, ac
cording to the London Standard,
stated that the British Government is
highly satisfied with the foodstuffs
supplied by Chicago, and they have
every confidence in the manufactures
entering Britain from the Stockyards.
“The food for the Army will be
packed under the supervision of Brit
ish representatives at the invitation
of the packers,” he said, “although
the Government is ready to rely upon
the new Pure Food regulations re
cently inaugurated in the United
States. All the talk about the inef
ficiency of the new law is sheer non- j
sense. British oificers in America
have gone fully into the matter and ;
the authorities are perfectly satisfied
to place orders in Chicago when con
ditions call for outside supplies of
canned meats.”
