WHAT IS PE-RU-IMA? Is It a Catarrh Remedy, or a Tonic, or is it Both? gome people call Pernna a great tonic. Others refer to Peruna as a great catarrh remedy. Which of these people are right? Is it more proper to call Peruna a ca tarrh remedy than to call it a tonic? Our reply is, that Peruna is both a tonic and a catarrh remedy. Indeed, there can be no effectual catarrh rem edy that is not also a tonic. In order to thoroughly relieve any case of catarrh, a remedy must not only have a specif c action on the mu cous membranes affected by the ca tarrh, but it must have a general tonio action on the nervous system. Catarrh, even in persons who are otherwise strong, is a weakened con dition of some mucous membrane. There must be something to strength en the circulation, to give tone to the arteries, and to raise the vital forces. Perhaps no vegetable remedy in the world has attracted so much attention from medical writers as EYPEASTIS CANADENSIS. The wonderful effi cacy of this herb has been recognized many years, and is growing in its held upon the medical profession. When joined with CUBEBS and COPAIBA a trio of medical agents is formed in Pe mna which constitutes a specific rem edy for catarrh that in the present state of medical progress cannot bo improved upon. This action, rein forced by such renowned tonics as COLLINSONIA CANADENSIS, COR YDALI3 FORMOSA and CEDECN BEED, ought to make this compound an ideal remedy for catarrh in all its stages and locations in the body. From a theoretical standpoint, there fore, Peruna is beyond criticism. The use of Peruna, confirms this opinion. Numberless testimonials from every quarter of the earth furnish ample evidence that this judgment is not over enthusiastic. When practical ex perience confirms a well-grounded the ory the result is a truth that cannot be shaken. ANYTHING BETTER THAN HOME. ‘I am sick to death of everything,” said tha society woman. “Let’s spend this evening where we’ve never spent one before.” “Agreed!” said her husband. “Shall we try home or church?” "Church." she replied, sighing Beware of Ointments For Catarrh That Contain Mercury, as mercury will surely destroy the sense of smell and completely derange the whole sys tem when entering it through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable phy sicians, as the damage they will do is ten fold to the good you can possibly derive from them. Hall’s Catarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney & Cos., Toledo, 0., contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of thesystem. inbuyingHall's Catarrh Cure be sure you get the genuine, it is taken in ternally and made in Toledo. A correspondent sends the follow ing Interesting bit st testimony to Harper’s Weekly: “In connection with the ‘Animal Controversy’ being dis cussed by the prominent naturalists and nature-writers of the country, I would like to cite the following case in support of Dr. Hornaday’s belief in the reasoning powers of animals that they do reason from cause to effect. “Mr. William Roberts, who drives the stage from here to Quartzite, has a dog who accompanies him on his trips. When the dog gets tired of running along beside the stage fee Jumps into the stage between the seats. When the stage is moving slowly, he Jumps into the stage from the side, just clearing the rear wheel, but when the stage is moving swiftly, he Jumps from a position a little to the rear of the wheel, alights on the rear wheel, and the momentum throws him into the stage. It sure ly was not instinct or a natural im pulse that led the dog to jump on to the swiftly moving wheel. But when we think of the little we know of the workings of the human brain, is It not too much to presume to analyze that of an animal?” Bees Race Pigeons. It Is not generally known that bees are swifter In flight than pigeons— that is, for short distances. Some years ago a pigeon fancier of Ham me, Westphalia, laid a wager that a dozen'bees liberated three miles from their hives would reach home in less time than a dozen pigeons. The com petitors were given wing at Rvbern, a village nearly a league from Ham me, and the first bee reached the hive a quarter of a minute in advance of the first pigeon. Three other bees reached the goal before the second pigeon. The bees were also slightly handicapped, having been rolled in flour before starting, for purpose of identification —Reader. All Scholars. Secretary Wilson will have no Words carved on the new building of the Agricultural Department, but why does he tolerate allegorical figures ornamenting the edifice? They are as rubbishy ’ as the Latin words he has ordered cut out. Fortunately, he can not get at the national motto. He is not so complimentary to his clientele as Gen. Butler was when he was run ning for governor of Massachusetts against John D. Long. In one of his speeches he said: “What has this Mr. Long ever done that he should be elected governor? I never heard that he had done anything except to trans late Virgil's Aeneid, and that was of no ÜBe to the Democrats of Massa chusetts, for every one of them can read the Aeneid in the original.”- Philadelphia Record. Largest Flag. The largest flag in the world floats from the tallest building in the world. The bunting was raised in honor of Robert Fulton's great work to hu manity to commemorate the hundredth birthday of the first steamboat. The flag, which was raised over the Sin ger building at Broadway and Liber ty street, measures 29 feet by 59 feet and consists of the United States em blem on a ground of white. It is known as the peace flag and was raised under the auspices of the Lea gue of Peace. It floats from the thirty-fourth floor of the Singer build ing, which now stands 435 feet from the Broadway pavement. The boom which the flag flies from is 60 feet high, so that this is the higest point yet reached by Old Glory.—New York Correspondent Pittsburg Dispatch. Wonders of a Watch. Very few who carry a watch ever think of the unceasing labor it per forms, under what would be consid ered shabby treatment for any other treatment. There are many who think that a watch ought to run for years without cleaning or a drop of oil. Read thi3 and judge for yourself. The main wheel in an ordinary American watch makes four revolutions a day for twenty-four hours, or 1,4G0 in a year. Next, the center wheel, twenty four revolutions in a day, of 8,760 in a year. The third wheel, 192 in a day, or 59,080 in a year. The fourth wheel, 2,440 in a day, or 545,000 in a year. The fifth, or escape wheel, 12,900 in a day, or 4,728,200 in a year. The ticks or beats are 388,800 in a day, or 14, 812.000 in a year. WHY NOT? "Come,” cried the mother of the peevish little bull-pup, “you can’t mend matters by whining, can you?” “I’m afraid not,” sniffed the pup. “Then,” said the mother, “if not, whine not.”—Answers. Almost everyone likes a cereal food of some kind at breakfast and supper, but the ordinary way of cooking cereals results in a pasty masß that Is hard to digest, and if not properly digested, the raw mass goes down into the intestinal tract where gas Is generated and trouble follows. Everyone knows that good food properly digested keeps the body well, while poor food, or even food of good quality that is poorly prepared and not digested, is sure to bring on some kind of disease. The easiest food to digest in this line is Grape-Nuts, made from wheat and barley, and cooked thoroughly at the factory, some 12 to 16 hours be ing consumed in the different pro cesses of preparation. The food, therefore, is ready for instant ser vice and the starch has been changed to a form of Sugar, so that it is pre digested and ready for almost imme diate absorption. A Chicago young lady writes that she suffered for years from indiges tion and dyspepsia from the use of food that wa3 not suitable to her powers of digestion. She says: "I began using Grape-Nuts, and 1 confess to having had a prejudice at fiist, and was repeatedly urged before I finally decided to try the food, but I have not known what indigestion is since using it, ar.d have never been stronger or in better health. I have increased in weight from 109 to 124 pounds.” People ran be well, practically without coat, if they will adopt scien tific food and leave off the indigesti ble sort. “There's a Reason." Grape-Nuts Food is crisp and de licious to the taste. It should be served exactly as it comes from the package, without cooking, except in cases where it is made up into pud dings and other desserts.— Book of delicious rerip s, and “The Road to Wellville," i:i pugs. In Torments With Terrible Sores on Face and Body—Tore at Flesh —Cured by Cutlcura. ‘‘My little son. when about a year and a half old. began to have sores come out on his face. They began to come on his arms, then on other parte of his body, and then one came on his chest, worse than the others. Still he grew worse. At the end of about, a year and a half of suffering he grew so bad I had to tie his hartds in cloths at night to keep him from serateh ing the sores and tearing the flesh. He got to be a mere skeleton and was hardly able to walk. I sent to the drug store and got a cake of Cuticura Soap and a box of Outi cura Ointment, and at the end of about two months the sores were all well. He has never had any sores of any kind since, and T can sincerelv say that only for the Outicura Remedies my precious child would have died from those terrible sores. I used only one cake of Soap and about three boxes of Ointment. Mrs. Egbert Sheldon. R. F.
