POLITICS IN BUTTS Politics continues to wax warm er in Butts. * ♦ * The Progress goes to press this week with five more political announcements. Messrs. W. J. McClendon for tax collecector; J. Matt McMichael for represena tive; S. J. Smith for treasurer; Thos. E. Redman for tax re ceiver, and J. M. Strickland, of Griffin, for solicitor general. * * * While these gentlemen would merit all the pleasant things which we could say about them, The Progress realizes that the people of Butts are conscious of their many good points, and therefore feel that any words of commendation would be super flous. Anyway, we are glad to publish their announcements and commend their candidacy to the earnest consideration of the voters. * * * \ Although no official announce ments have been made, it appears that there are now at least four men in the race for the state sen ate. The latest addition is Col. Lucian L. Ray. He with the other gentlemen in the race— Messrs. O. M. Duke, F. Z. Curry ahd S. H. Mays, will doubtless make some fur fly as the primary approaches. Our Flovilla Route 1 corres pondent wants George Mallett to run for representative. George is a sound article any way you take him and- Butts county could well afford to do worse things than send him to the legislature. AROUND NO 2. Wise was born in Henry county, on a farm, and was raised on the farm. When a young man he read law with Hall and Hammond of Atlanta, and then with Judge E. J. Rea gan of McDonough, and began the practice of his profession at Fayetteville. He has been very successful as a lawyer, and still retains his farming interests. From a poor boy by his frugality and temperate life he has worked himself up among the business men of Fayetteville until he has been honored with the presidency of the Farmers’ and Merchants’ bank, at that place, and for last two terms has been chairman of the ways and means committee, said by many to be the most im portant committee of the house, and as a legislator, was one of the floor managers with Hon. Seaborn Wright and Col. Coving ton in the passage of the state temperance bill. “He with Hon. Murphy Candler and W. A. Covington were com mittee of prohibitionists, which met with similar committee of anti-prohibitionists and reached agreement by which bill finally passed after days of 'filibuster- ing.' * ‘He also introduced and succeed ed in passing bill by which the governor is authorized to use any money in the treasury not other wise appVopriated to pay the common school teachers of the state, and by which they will re ceive pay monthly, and many other important bills all looking to the welfare of the people of this state. He has always been not only a warm prhibitionist, but an earnest consistent temper ance man, and active in Chris tian work." APPLICATION FOR CHARTER State of Georgia, County of Butts.
