RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR
MEDAL CONTEST 1907-8
The Georgia Division, U. D. C.,
with the desire of stimulating
among the young people of the
state an interest in the study of
history, especially the history of
the war between the states again
offers a gold medal to the student
writing the best essay on the sub
ject assigned.
Teachers of the state are earn
estly requested to encourage and
urge their pupils to enter the
contest.
Rules and Regulations.
1. Subject, 1862 in the Confed
eracy.
2. The contest is open to all
white children of Georgia, under
the age of eighteen.
3. The length of the essay to
be from 1000 to 1500 words. The
papers to be type written, if pos
sible, though that is not essential.
4. Preparation for the essays
may be made at home or else
where with full use of all refer-
ences.
Essays must be written within
the week, Feb. 14—21 inclusive,
in presence of teacher or county
committeeman.
5. Each essay shall be signed
with fictitious name, and accom
panied by a sealed envelope ad
dressed with same fictitious name
but containing real name and ad
dress of writer and name of
school.
6. Manuscript to be graded
upon subject matter and style.
7. The medal will be awarded
at closing exercises of school at
or near which it is won. It will
be presented by the President of
the local chapter of the Daugh
ters of the Confederacy.
8. The principal of each con
testing school, shall send to the
local committee of his county the
best essay from his school, send
ing at same time, information as
to the number of contestants
from his school. These local
(county) committees shall be ap
pointed or arranged for, one in
each county, by the state com
mitteeman within whose jurisdic
tion the county shall fall. It
shall be the duty of each county
Committee to assist in conduct
ing the work in the county, to se _
lect from the essays submitted to
it, the best one to represent the
county before the state com
mittee, and to send to its state
committeeman the chosen essay,
together with the information as
to the number of contestants in
the county.
Each member of the state com
mittee shall have direct super
vision of the work in the desig
nated counties, shall attend to
the appointing of a local commit
tee in each of her counties, and
together with two assistants
whom she may appoint," 3 shall
judge the essays submitted by
those counties, selecting the best
two for the final consideration of
the entire state committee; these
essays, with information as to
the number of contestants in he..
counties, to be sent to the chair
man of her state committee. The
entire number of essays thus se
lected shall be sent in rotation to
all the members of the committee
for examination and grading, be
ing retained by each member for
one week only, then forwarded
to another and finally returned to
the chairman.
The gradings or decisions on
these essays shall be sent direct
ly to the chairman by each com
mitteeman, as soon as practicable
after completion.
Immediately after the receipt
of all reports, the chairman shall
forward to each member of the
committee, a compiled list of the
decisions of all.
9. Essays are to be sent to lo
cal (county) committees on or
before March Ist.
The best essay from each coun
ty must be sent to the state com
mitteeman on or before March
22.
The best two of the essays sub
mitted to each of the members of
the state committee must be in
possession of the chairman on or
before April 6th.
