BUTTS COUNTY PROGRESS VOLUME 26 PEPPERTON Mill Will Install Sixty New Looms. “Same Britt” Will Take the Stump tor Coroner and Would Like to Have “Jint Spute” With his Opponents. Mrs. Bradley was quite sick Monday. Mrs. E. A. Johnson who has been ill recently is some better. Mrs. J. A. Evans is still im proving and will be up in a few days. Mildred, the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Nail, was ill Sunday. Ruby, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Biars, has been quite sick this week. Mrs. A. J. Turner spent Sun day in Jackson with her mother, Mrs. J. H. Thurston. Mr. Will McCalester, of Griffin, spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Turner and friends. Col. F. Z. Curry, candidate for senate, will speak at the Pepper ton city hall Thursday evening. Mr. R. C. Williby has discon tinued work at the mill and is now at the Carmichael Buggy Cos. Mrs. A. L. Tiner, of Eastman, is with her mother, Mrs. Williams. She came for medical treatment. Ganelle, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thomas, who has been quite sick, is steadily im proving. Mr. Jno. Garner, of Barnesville, who has heen visiting his father and mother for the past week has returned home. The Mill has been most lucky in securing Mr. Jno. Hacking, formerly of Providence, R. I. as head of the Weave Dept. Rev. B. F. Dodson, a Meth odist minister from Atlanta, preached at the Pepperton church Sunday morning and evening. The Mill is expecting to get about sixty new looms this week. This will be quite an addition to their numerous advancements. The many friends of Mr. John Gordon will be rejoiced to know that he will move his family from Barnesville to this place the last of the week. Mr. J. E. Owens while weav ing Thursday afternoon in some way got his fingers caught in the shuttles —one finger had to be amputated. Mr. A. H. Smith together with Mr. Tom Bond went to the Gate City last Wednesday to purchase Spring goods for the new depart ment of Smith & Cos. Smith & Cos., the Pepperton Store, has exactly doubled ns capacity of holding goods and customers and they would be glad for you to give them a call. Mr. C. G. Britt, candidate for Coroner of Butts Cos., is to speak at the Pepperton court house on next Saturday afternoon and will be glad to have “Little Simon or “Uncle Jess” meet him in de bate. The Sunbeam Society of Pep perton Baptist Church had its regular meeting at 2 p. m. on last Sunday. This little class is prospering under guidance oi their excellent leader, Mrs. Clara Chappell who hopes to soon have a much larger class. SOUTH BUTTS Lois Caston spent Sunday with Mary Smith. Hunt Ridgeway gave Grady school a pleasant call Friday. Raymond Wright spent Satur day and Sunday with his parents. JACKSON, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, MARCH 19, 1908 Mr. Paul Evans went to Jack son last Thursday “driving cows. ’ ’ Mr. J. E. Hale was over from Pike county Saturday on a busi ness trip. Miss Ada Johnson entertained a few of her friends Saturday evening. Miss Mary Lizzie Pettigrew visited Miss Imogene Harkness Sunday. Mrs. L. S. Woodward enjoyed a pleasant visit with Mrs. J. M. Ball Thursday. Mrs. J. W. Johnson and chil dren spent Sunday with Mrs. Fannie Johnson. Miss Alice Thaxton was the guest of Misses Bertha and Nolie Mangham Sunday. Misses Kate and Effie Thaxton were in Jackson shopping the latter part of last week. Misses Tommie Nutt and Mary Geilliard spent Sunday at the home of Mr. Jno. B. Evans. Misses Lillian and Annie Carter were the guests of Miss Sallie Mae Ball Friday afternoon. Another little girl came Wed nesday to help brighten Mr. G. R. Ridgeway’s beautiful home. Mr. J. R. Pettigrew spent Sat urday night and Sunday with his friend, Mr. W. H. Thaxton. Mr. and Mrs. Lon Wright and Mrs. 0. L. Weaver spent Sunday p. m. with Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Ridgeway. Miss Annie Hammond, who is staying in Jackson and going to school, spent Saturday and Sun day with homefolks. Among the visitors at Liberty Sunday school Sunday were Mis ses Bessie Hale, Alice Maddox and Missie Davis; Messrs. Carlton Allen, Geo. Head, Homer Ham, Hubert Hale and A. M. Holland. We, with Mr. Bryant Thaxton as superintendent, have a flourish ing Sunday school at Liberty. Mrs. W. J. McClendon gave an old-fashioned quilting last Satur day. Curry is making some improvements on his home. Mr J. M. Vaughn, of Gaines ville, visited J. 0. Vaughn Sun day. Mr and Mrs. 0. S. Duke, of Jenkinsburg, passed through our vicinity Sunday. Mrs. Vines Collier, of Jackson, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Burford. Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Curry visited their daughter, Mrs. J. I) Burford last week. Last Saturday and Sunday were preaching days, and w e had good services both day s. Mr Oscar Presley and family, spent Sunday with the family of Mr. and Mrs. Williams. Messrs. J. A. King and Homer Vaughn were among *e early visitors to town this ueek. Miss Mary Vaughn had as her guests Sunday Misses Maggie McMichael and Dovie Thaxton. Miss Allie McMichael, of near McCords mill, was the guest of her sister, Mrs. T. B. Conner, Sunday. W. C. Stodghill is one of our hustling young farmers—works the week and Saturday evening thrown in. Messrs. George Vaughn and Paul Thaxton gave Miss Mary Boyd Mote a pleasant call Sun day evening. Mr. Charlie Sutton, of High Falls, and Miss Kelly Bennett, of McCords mill, attended church here Sunday. Mrs. H. M. Vaughn, Sr.,enter tained as her guest Tuesday of last week, Mesdames Mirandie Perdue, Bell Mote and Mary Lou Conner. Misses Annice and Mary Vaughn had as their guests last Tuesday, Misses Mary Boyd Mote, Ophelia Banks, Dovie and Birdie Perdue. Politics is about the only gossip out here yet. The candidates seem to have the utmost confi dence in us as there hasn’t been a single one to see us. I presume they are going to let us vote our own convictions. Miss Fannie Mae Moore spent Sunday with Miss Annie Jones. Miss Evlyn Bankston spent Saturday with Miss Hattie Jones. Mrs. Martha Moore spent last week with her soil, J. W. Moore. Miss Cassie Maddox spent Fri day night with Miss Fannie Mae Moore. Mrs. C. A. Pittman and Miss Maude Nutt went to Jackson last Saturday. Miss Willie Tucker, of Shady dale, is visiting relatives on num ber two this week. A crowd of young people on our route expect to go fishing at High Falls soon. Misses Vera and Annie Jones spent Sunday night with Miss Fannie Mae Moore. A big bass voice is heard down at the home of Mr. and J. C. Moore in the way of a 10-lb boy. Mr. Lawrence Maddox and Miss Cornelia Hardy attended preaching at Beulah last Sunday. Mrs. Tom Cawthon gave a quilting last Thursday afternoon which were enjoyed by all pres ent. Miss Elizabeth Carroll, of Au gusta, visited Misses Emma and Laura Allen Saturday and Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Redman and son, Lester, visited the fam ily of Mr. Henry Bankston last Sunday. Misses Janie Lemon and Anna B. Watkins spent Sunday very pleasantly with Lou and Lilia Watkins. Quite a crowd attended the Cur ry-Mays political debate at Stark High School building last Satur day afternoon. Children's day exercises will be observed at the Methodist church at Stark first Sunday in June. Everybody invited. There will be a singing at Moore’s Chapel fifth Sunday afternoon. All lovers of music are cordially invited. Mr. Geo. Farrer, of Atlanta, a former Butts county boy, called on one of No. 2’s sweetest young ladies last Sunday. Miss Hattie Compton, who has been teaching in the Stark High School, returned last Sunday to her home in west Butts. Mormon Elders, candidates, tramps, (foot peddlers) and a few agents mixed along, are keeping number two hot these days. Mrs. James Walter Collins and sweet little children of Macon, came last week for a few days visit to her father’s family, J. L. Maddox. Misses Mattie Giles and Mae Belle Maddox went to Jackson shopping one day last week and visited Mr. J. C. Moore’s family at Pepperton. Misses Cornelia Hardy, Nora and Inez Reeves, Messrs. Chas. Elliot and Reid Maddox called on Mr. and Mrs. Tom Cawthon last Friday night. Mr. C. E. Maddox and family, of Flovilla, Mr. J. J. Oneal and family, of Jackson, spent last Sunday at the hospitable home of J. F. McMichael. Mrs. E. W. Carroll and sweet little children, of Augusta, came last week for a few day’s visit to the family of Hon. Wm. Hodges and omer relatives on No. 2. Well, we think most of number two’s grip patients are out after being laid up for several days ex cept Hon. Wm. Hodges who con tinues quite ill we ai;e sorry to state. Miss Ethel Redman, an accom plished young lady of near Stark, after a most pleasant visit to rel atives and friends in Eatonton and Locust Grove, has returned home to the delight of her many friends. Miss Emma Brown, an accom plished young lady of Orchard Hill, who has been visiting the families of Judge 0. A. Andrews and W. M. Andrews, left this week for a few day’s visit to friends in McDonough, after which she will be joined by Mrs. Mary Mary K. Andrews for a visit to relatives at Griffin and her home at Orchard Hill. FLOVILLA Miss Lucy Goodman of Jackson, spent Sunday in Flovilla. Mr. “Rube” Leverett,of Cork, was seen in Flovilla Tuesday. Col. Frank Z. Curry of Jack son, was a recent visitor to our town. Mrs. Lula Duke left Saturday for an extended visit to Hot Springs, Ark. Mrs. R. L. Allen and Mrs. E. L. Lawson went to Atlanta shop ping Tuesday. Mr. Leon Goodman, of Glades ville, visited his sister, Mrs. Dr. Waits, recently. Miss Willie Hencely has re named home after an extended visit to Atlanta. Mrs. L. D. Hoard left Tuesday morning for a week’s visit to her husband, who is at Ashburn, Ga. Miss Lula Lawson left Monday for Forsyth for several week's visit to her sister, Mrs. Thomas. Mr. W. J. Wood, a popular Life Insurance Agent of Jack son, was seen on our streets Tues day. Miss Alice Thompson, who is teaching school at Liberty Hill, spent the week-end -with home folks. Mr. Crof Maddux is now with the R. L. Allen Trading Cos., and Mr. Lamar Higgins is with J. T. Edwards & Son. Miss Maude Smith and brother, Mr. Eidson, who are teaching NUMBER 12 school at Iron Spring, spent the week-end in Flovilla. The many friends of Dr. A. F. White will regret to learn of his illness, and wish for him a speedy restoration to health. Miss May Nixon, the ' popular trimmer for the R. L. Allen Trading Company, came Saturday evening and is at Tlotel Millen. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Chambliss have rented the lovely little cot tage owned by Mrs. Lula Duke and will go to housekeeping at once. Miss Bessie Torbett, of Cork, has accepted a position with F. M. Lawson, and will be glad to have her friends call on her there. Miss Lucy Ingram, of Jesup, visited her brother, C. D. Ingram, for a few days recently. She was enroute to Alabama to visit her mother. Mrs. C. C. Jewett and little son, Charles, of Macon, came up Sunday morning for a week or ten days visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Thompson. Mrs. Lucy Dozier Douglas left Thursday last for Atlanta, where she will remain for several days, going from there to Roberta, Ga.. to visit her sister, Mrs. B. F. Walker. Rev. M. L. Harris went to Covington Thursday last and re turned Friday, bringing with him his sister, Miss Lola, who remained with them for the week-end. Mr. Walter Ward, who until recently was the popular cashier of the W. B. Dozier Bank, left last week for New Mexico. The good wishes of hosts of friends go with him to his new home. Rev. Z. M. Leverette, of For syth, who attended the Bible Conference in Atlanta, passed through Flovilla Saturday morn ing on his way to Cabaniss to fill his regular appointment there Saturday and Sunday. Dr. and Mrs. J. Mote Watts and charming little daughter, Martha, left Saturday for Jack son where Mrs. Watts will be for some time. Dr. Watts left Sun day morning for Hot Springs, N. C., where he has accepted a position. A delightful affair of last Fri day evening was the dinner at which Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Gum ming entertained in honor of Misses Alice Gertrude Smith and Rosa Greer, celebrating their birthday, The table had an attractive decoration of Palma violets and maiden hair fern, and all the minor details of the beautifully appointed table were in harmony with the lovely flowers. The guests included, be sides Misses Smith and Greer, Misses Willie Terrell, Lucile El der and Bessie Blood worth; Mes srs C. D. Ingram, Troup Smith, Parham Smith, Orin Dozier and Robert Thompson. PRUF. LANIER WILL CONDUCT LAURENS COUNTY INSTITUTE Prof. W. R. Lanier, who for several years has conducted the teachers’ institute in Laurens county, will conduct the institute again this year. The tdachers of the county state that he under stands this work better than any instructor ever secured here. He was for a number of years a resi dent of Laurens county, and was connected with the Dublin Public Schools for years. His friends are delighted that the County Board of Education has made this selection.- Dublin Courier- Dispatch.
