GOOD ROADS
Several Georgia Counties
Are Considering Bonds
Ciood Roads Are Inexpensive As
Compared lo Bad Ones—
Does Not Necessarily
Raise Tax Rate.
a
The good roads crusade is
spreading with great rapidity in
all parts of the south, and sever
al Georgia counties are consider
ing the advisability of issuing
bonds for the purpose of making
extensive permanent improve
ments on country highways.
Albany Herald.
The march of improvement is
certainly abroad and is spreading
beyond the cities and towns. In
deed in some places the counties
are improving the roads faster
than the cities. Savandah Press.
Perhaps one of the points
about good roads that needs
emphasing until it becomes patent
on the minds of the minds of the
people generally, is that good
roads are inexpensive as com
pared with bad ones. In most
instances, perhaps all where the
roads are best, the tax rates are
lowest. This will hold true in
Georgia, as we observe by an
examination of the tax rates of
the various counties of the state.
To make our point perfectly
plain, and as an illustration, we
will summon the tax rates of the
counties of the Cherokee circuit,
the thought occurring to us from
an examination of Judge Fite’s
charge to the grand jury, in
whicn he stated that the roads of
Whitfield county were best of
any in his circuit.
The tax rates, in mills, in the
counties of the Cherokee circuit
are as follows:
Bartow - - 6.20
Catoosa. 6.70
Dade 6.621-2
Gordon . 6.55
Murray r.- 1 . 5.70
Whitfiield 5.20
Thus it is seen plainly that.
Whitfield, enjoying the lowest
tax rate, is also enjoying the best
roads in the circuit. Similar ex
amples exist all over the state.
The reason is n6t hidden in a
great economic question, but is
just a simple proposition that can
be stated in the following simple
language: Good roads are not so
expensive to keep in fine repair
as bad ones are to keep passable.

HOW'TO RAISE BOYS.
‘ ‘Thar aint much of a problem
in raisin’ boys ef you’ll have a
little common, sense about it, “
said Mr. Billy Saunders. “Don't
let 'em run wild like pigs in
woods, an' don't keep the lines
too tight, un‘ when things go
wrong don't be afear’d of usin'
a raw-hide. But don't fergit
that the mammies and daddies
of the land are twice responsi
ble when one of the’r boys goes
wrong. Ef the legislatur’ wants
to do a good work, an’ make
better citizens out’n the risin'
generation, let it put a heavy
penalty on the dear parents of
the boys that go wrong.”—Joel
Chandler Harris, in Uncle Rem
