HENRY COUNTY WEEKLY PAYS
TRIBUTE TO HON. J. W. WISE
We reproduce the following
article from the last issue of the
Henry County Weekly with refer
ence to the candidacy of J. W.
Wise for Solicitor General:
Hon. J. Walter Wise, candidate
for Solicitor General of the
Flint Circuit is a native of Henry
county. His father, the Hon.
Geo. E. Wise, was one of the
most prominent citizens of the
county and a brave Confederate
Soldier. As he was a man of
large family, and of limited
means .he could not give his
children a collegiate education,
hence young Walter was denied
the educational advantages that
come to the sons of the wealthy
and had to be content with such
education as he could acquire in
the common schools of the county,
(then much inferior to those of
the present day,) together with
a short term in the high schools
at McDonough. But he was
brave and determined, and made
up his mind to succeed in spite of
these disadvantages. With mon
ey earned from teaching he was
able to pay his own expenses
while studying law. He read law
in the office of the present Judge
of the Superior Court of the
Flint Circuit. Possessed with
studious habits and a bright
mind he prepared for ad
mission to the bar in an unusually
short time. His slender means
were now exhausted and he went
out into the world to begin the
battle of life without a dollar in
his pocket, but he possessed
many qualifications for success in
life much more valuable than
money. He had youth, health,
talent, ambition and a deter
mined spirit. Having in early
life contracted habits of sobriety,
industry, economy and honesty
and being possessed of a bright
mind he at once began to succeed
in his profession. So rapid was
his advancement that it required
but a few years to place him at
the head of the bar of his adopted
county, and he is today regarded
by the bench and. bar of the
state as one of the best lawyers
within her borders. So great
was the confidence of the people
of his adopted county in his
capacity and integrity that he
had lived among them but a few
years when they insisted upon
his representing them in the
legislature of the state. He was
elected Representative practically
without opposition and has served
his people faithfully in this capac
ity for six years. Before the end
of the first session of the legis
lature to which he had been
elected, the people of the state
discovered that he was not mere
ly the Representative of Fayette
county, but that he belonged to
the whole state. He at once be
came a leader in the House of
Representatives and still holds
that proud position. His great
work in perfecting the disfran
chise amendment to the State
Constitution so that no white man
in Georgia, rich or poor, of good
moral character, could -ever be
deprived of the right to vote,
will endear him forever to every
lover of justice and right.
Having Christian parents, Mr.
Wise in early life became a mem
ber of the Church and has ever
since been an active consistent
Christian, not one given to boast
ing of his own good deeds, but
“simply a true man trusting in
God and trying to keep His com
mandments. ” He is possessed of
moral courage in a marked de
gree. He never dodges any
question but has convictions and
the courage to avow them.
In a great speech recently de
livered in the U. S. Senate
eulogizing the lamented Senators,
Morgan and Pettus, of Alabama,
Senator Daniel, of Virginia, said:
“They were never trimmers.
They were not money lovers or
seekers They were not hustle-s,
rushing hither and thither to get
ahead of anybody else or tc get
unto themselves hasty riches.
They had time to do everything
that was for them to do, but no
time to waste for the frail, flit
ting and adventurous things up
on which many set great store.
Like the princes of their race,
T serve’ was the watchword
of their instinct and ambi
tion, and so faithfully did they
serve that those served by them
felt so safe in their hands that
they never questioned, their ser
vants, but were proud to serve
in turn the things they aimed at,
which were their country, God
and truth.” The same can be
truly said of Walter Wise. He
has in him the elements for the
making of a great Solicitor Gen
eral.
In a circuit where merit is
always recognized and rewarded
his friends feel that he cannot
fail to win.
