The sixth grade are drawing a
set of maps, showing territorial
growth of the United States.
Prof. Lanier has offered a dollar
prize for the best set.
The maps drawn by pupils in
Miss Arden’s room illustrating
battles fought during the Civil
War, with texts explaining bat
tles, are very fine, and shows
that good work has been done in
this class.
Some of the 6th grade pupils
are doing special work in arith
metic, preparing for examina
tions.
Margaret Sams won the prize,
a gauze fan, for having nearest
perfect lessons for three weeks.
Work in the Bth grade arith
metic has been very encouraging
for the past month.
The 7th grade are sorry to lose
Stillwell Ball, who has stopped
school.
Watson Barnes, Walter Sams
and Catherine Shaver were on
the seventh grade absent list last
week.

GOODY’S DISTRICT
Plow Handles Discusses the Pub
lic Road System.
The pick and shovel gang is
now doing some fine work in
Coody’s district, with Mr. John
Thompson in charge. He thor
oughly understands his business.
The roads are being worked
as fast as possible, with the means
at their command, by Messrs
Thornton, Nolen, Thompson and
Treadwell, all of whom are well
experienced in road working.
Now I wish to touch on one
phase of the road question that
I have never seen or heard dis
cussed. and what I am going to
say is not meant to reflect on any
one. The question is this. It is
the unthoughfulness of people
along the public road to cut brush
sprouts and grass and throw
them in the ditches. Did you
ever stop to think what an enor
mous expense this way of doing
entails on the county? Grass
thus dropped in the ditches,
when there comes a big rain,
clogs the ditches and throws the
water out in the road and when
the flood is over, the result is a
big gully in the middle of the
road. Then the county commis
sioners and road workers get a
sound cussing for what somebody
else done.
Now let us all remember that
ditches are made on each “side of
the road to carry off the water,
and not the dumping ground for
brush, sprouts and tree tops.
This article is not written in re
proof of any particular one, for
I found out long ago that people
are going to do as they please as
near as they can. But very often
we harm ourselves by doing as
we please. Plowhandles

Not counting the Republican regime Just

fourteen years, making a grand total of
thirty-four years for only two men and both
