BUTTS COUNTY STUDENT
WRITES OF THE UNIVERSITY
*
Mr. Editor:—Knowing your in
terest in the University of Geor
gia, I am writing you some in
formation in regal'd to its work
and growth.
The University is located at
Athens,a town ofabout 18000 in
habitants. The University was
chartered 1785 and is the oldest
state university in the South.
It is a matter of great pride to
the students and alumni and
friends of the University to know
that her faculty ranks with that
of any college in the land. The
faculty consists of forty-one
members and every one has the
ability to discharge the duties of
his position.
The religious influences are
good. Services are held daily
in the University chapel, led by
the Chancellor. On Sunday Bi
ble classes are taught by Uni
versity professors in several
churches of the city. The Y. M.
C. A. building is situated near
the campus and many of £he
students are members of the
Association and attend its Bible
classes and gymnasium work.
The students are bound to
gether by common interests and
by that strong and indefinable
thing called “college spirit”
Our students are gentlemen,
friendly, companionable. This
student body stands for morality,
rignteousness, manhood, and
i? nil ag unbecoming a gentleman
will be countenanced or tolerated.
Many think that Georgia is a
place for only rich boys. This is
certainly a mistaken idea. The
expenses can be made even
less than those at any first-class
“prep” school. There is no tui
tion whatever to be paid, only a
matriculation fee of $17.00. Good
first-class board can be had at
the University Dining Hall for
$9.00. Room in the dormitory
for $2.00 per month. $15.00 will
cover the actual yearly expenses.
The expenses are so small that
even the very poor can come to
the University. The majority of
the student body are compara
tively poor boys. About 25 per
cent of the students are working
their way through college. A
large per cent of student body i§
composed of country boys and
each year this number is increas
ing. They are taking advantage
of the education offered in agri
culture. The new SIOO,OOO agri
cultural building will be one of
the largest and most beautiful on
the campus. In it will be ample
room for all various departments
of agricultural instruction. The
courses offered in this college;
will meet the needs of the young
farmer of the South.
Among other new buildings on
the campus is the new library,
the gift of George Foster Pea
body. The library contains over
35000 volumes. Another new
building is the Science Hall in
which are. the schools of chem
istry. pharmacy* and forestry.
New dormitories and a Y. M. C.
A. are soon to be erected.
Our department of athletics
is a thing of great pride to us.
In this depa t lent our 1908 base
ball team has been one of the
greatest we have ever had. Out of
20 college games played this
spring we lost only one game,
thereby winning the champion
ship of the S. I. A. A.
The appreciation of the hard
work of the team was shown at
a big reception given them by
the “Georgia 800-’OB Club,” Fri
day night the 26th of May.
There were 1200 or more present.
Speeches were made by members
of the faculty, alumni, students
and citizens. Every one present
was filled with the spirit of ‘ ‘BOO
students for Georgia by October
1908, and everyone a gentleman.”
