SOME NOTES ON BUTTS
COUNTY AND ITS RESOURCES
When our Creator held this
mundane sphere in the hollow of
His hand and cast it whirling into
space revolving fcboitfid the sun,
and when the morning stars sang
together, Butts coupjty was then
destined to be the best county in
the Empire State of the South.

Warehouse and a leading citizen
of the county.
powers and her agricultural re
sources in Georgia, to say noth
ing of her fine watering place,
Indian Spring, which is acknowl
edged the world over to contain
the finest healing properties in
the world, is the coming Sara
toga of the South. There are
many historical events that clus
ter around the Spring. It was
upon the venerable rocks and be-
the primeval oaks that the
red man stood after the treaty
with the pale faces, and took one
last lingering look at its waters
as they gushed from their bed of
Icy granite, ‘and gamboled down
the hillside and rippled through
mossy banks, and before turning
his eyes to the setting sun deliv
ered one of the most eloquent
speeches of modern times.
There is now in course of erec
tion which when completed will
be the finest electric railway sys
tem in the South, and at no far
distant day a man can at Indian
Spring, Flovilla or Jackson, step
on a street car and go to Atlanta
or Macon just like going from
Atlanta to its suburban parks—
and go any time of the day he
sees fit. When this system is
completed there will be on the
Ocmulgee river the finest lake this
side of the Great Lakes, and the
finest fishing ground in the
South. It will also be a fine
summer and winter resort.
V
It was in Butts county that a
bale of cotton was raised that
took the premium at the World's
Fair at Paris.
Up in the foot hills of the Al
leghanies in Northeast Georgia a
few years ago there roamed a
barefoot boy, and his name was
then and is now, Van Wilhite.
He came to Butts county some
thing over a year ago and estab
lished the newspaper known as
the Butts County Progress, and
today his every heart throb is
with every movement that looks
to the upbuilding of Butts county.
We bespeak for him a bright fu
ture in the field of journalism ;
and his pen will be felt in those
fields and his voice will some day
will be heard in our legislative
halls, for when he believes a
thing he does not mind writing
it, and when he knows a thing he
does not mind saying it. Will
the merchants support his paper?
We believe they will. Will the
banks stand by him ? We believe
they will. Will the farmers hold
up his hands? I know they will.

And so The Progress stands
ready to push every enterprise in
Butts county to a successful con
summation.
